Hourly rates

Postby shobute » Wed Aug 31, 2005 8:52 pm

Hi,

I've seen lots of people who post their hourly rates.
Do most people only count actual time spent playing when calculating this?

For example, I spend a good amount of time scouting tables and doing analysis of my sessions. If I ever play at a casino I must travel.

I think I should count this in my hourly rate.
But do other people?

Thanks!

Absolutely I count it!

It's a cost to me of doing business, that some of my time is spent commuting.

Likewise I think there's an additional cost to playing poker online, in that at the minimum you probably have to spend time scouting tables.

You're right, you answered the question.
And that's good, thank you.

On the other hand, I wonder how it is that people don't count their extras against their hourly rate.

I mean, for convenience sure it's easier just to say $x/hr and that's that.

But in terms of our lives, we are spending extra time doing poker prep work.

As a consultant I often start charging my client the moment I step out my door to work for them, and stop charging when I get home. (Unless I really like the client.)

Anyway, thanks for the answer!

I do not count that time either. especially since I am usually playing 1 or 2 tables while scouting for a 2nd or third to play - so its not time lost...if that makes any sense.

for B&M players this really is more of a big deal than online players. I figure that when I go to vegas I need my per hour to be bigger than it is at home. For me its a 4 hr drive plus hotel, food etc..

Plumbers make a bunch in the states, too. Probably not quite as much as computer geeks, but a pretty good living. I think it has something to do with being willing to do things not many people want to do -- and when somebody needs a plumber, they usually need him NOW and are willing to pay a LOT to have the disgusting problem go away.

Is this a threadjack? I don't even know anymore.
