Personally my experience is that I make a lot of money by betting into calling stations (more than 1/2 a stack often enough) than I lose by being unwilling to make marginal calls when they bet very big, because they just don't put me into that many tough positions in that regard.

you also have to rememebr that I'm often only short stacked for the beginning of a session until i get get reads - if I double up I'm no longer short and if I have a bigger stacked calling station at the table then of course I buy up to max.
