NL Variance?

Postby GodlikeRoy » Thu Apr 20, 2006 1:08 am

I know we have 20 buyins for a reason, but is it possible for a downswing to last 10 or so buyins simply on variance? Now i'll admit i titled away about 1.2 buyins ($120) in the span of this downswing but i truelly believe i got my money in with the best of it, or made the best play at the time, for the rest of the times i got stacked. Am I just kidding myself into thinking this is variance or is it really possible for downswings to last this long?

For the record I won about 10 buyins at NL100 before lthis downswing whereby I lost it all, so i'm currently classifying myself as a "breakeven" player, slightly ahead when you consider bonuses + rakeback.

I would like to know what others think and have experienced, though..

Anything is possible, Golden.

If you have your winrate and SD #s it is relatively easy to calculate the odds of losing certain amount over certain amount of hands. I was surprised when I ran my numbers and realized that for me it s not that uncommon to lose 10 buy ins in about 14K hands in NL$100. I got 4.3% chances of losing 10 buy ins in that sample, meaning that I WILL (or will likely...) hit a 10 buy ins,14K hands losing streak , once in every 310K hands.

I think I used a winrate of 5.PTBB/100 and SD of 37PTBB/100.

I played about 7,000 hands at NL50 and had a wrinate of 6ptbb/100 or so, i've moved back up and haven't played enough hands to get a good enough sample but i've been winning so far :) I identified a couple of mior leaks in my game (the size of my bets not being big enough and not extracting enough money out of my big hands) but i feel like i've plugged them and fingers crossed i wont have to move down again.

That's the quickest move down/up I've ever heard of! Goes to show how many hands/week you're playing. Good luck.
