First hand of the night

Postby starstealer » Fri Apr 22, 2005 12:32 pm

Okay - this one stung - but I also know I misplayed it pretty horribly.

I'm in the BB and this is my first hand - I have QQ.

It is folded around to a player in MP, who raises and is called once, by the button. I reraise, he re-reraises, the button folds and I call. The pot is 10.5 SB ($21)

The flop is J79 and I lead out, he raises - what would you do? What do you put him on?

I irrationally decided that he was on kings or aces and even more irrationally decided to try to make a play for the pot - and represent the top set. I called his raise, and on the turn (a 4), I check raised him - which he just called. I led out on the river (a 6) and he raises me. I reraised, he re-reraised, and I called. He showed trip jacks and took the pot down.

Now, this was a horrible way to play a hand. First of all - while AA and KK are certainly possibilities, they are not the only ones - JJ should've been in my mind. Since there's nothing here that I can actually beat - going for the bluff isn't the best option, unless I have knowledge that he might fold - which I don't have, since this is my first hand at the table.

Frankly, I should've been done with this much earlier. I probably could've simply called preflop - but I don't know that it would've helped...

With no reads, he could easily be overplaying his AJ or TT. I 3 bet preflop and probably check raise the flop. If he 3 bets, I likely call him down just because the pot is big enough to have to see if I win due to the "idiot factor." Even if he did have AA or KK, I don't see him folding at any point. At worst, he's calling you down so a bluff wouldn't be advisable in this situation.

I also advocating 3-betting the flop. If he caps you KNOW you're in trouble, but you can check-call down if you like. If he calls your 3-bet and then raises you on the turn when you lead out I would fold with 100% confidence unless I was getting the 20-1 necessary to draw to my set.
