And OH SO CLOSE to a Royal!

So anyway, you guys bet the turn or check it like I did? My read on the guys play was that he would most likely bet the river if I checked the turn. And I had an inkling that I may lose him on the turn if I bet it. Correct thinking or no?

I've occasionally played hands like that. I think it all depends on the player, I've played against a decent number of peopl who will bet the river every single time you check the turn behind them. So here ot all depends on whether or not our villian actually had something.

If he had nothing at all, my guess is he would've dumped on the turn and we miss out on 2 bets. Of course if he made a A high FD we give up quite a few bets on the turn also, but we can't always rely on situations where someone else makes a big hand against our str8 flush.

I don't ind the play against someone who will chronically bet the river when someone takes the line you did. Your line is pretty standard for someone who makes a raise with 2 big cards and misses.... You raised PF, bet the flop (which NOBODY respects anyway). When you check the turn it looks to most people like "I missed and couldn't get you to fold on the flop so I'm done" type line. Which IMO is VERY standard in a lot of LHE games, which is why if I'm bluffing I'll always fire the turn, because almost everyone will fire the river if you check whether they have something or not. It seems like people rarely fold as long as there's no A or K on the board, and with the line you took it looks like you missed raising with 2 big cards, since that's all most people seem to think that's all people raise with.

It's hard to say without a good read on him though, either way if he calls our turn and river bet it's the same as the way the hand played out. You make 1 bet on the turn and river or 2 on the river.

Since I don't know at the time that he has such a strong hand, how is it that I am supposed to know he wont fold to my turn bet? Its a good chance he will if he doesn't have a powerful hand IMO. Or, if I bet the turn and river and he just calls me both times, which is a good possibility, I get the same out of him as I did doing it the way I did it. I had the immortal nuts on the turn, why not give him a chance to catch something if he hasn't already? I'm not trying to be difficult here but I really want to know. Other than the turn check I don't see my play as passive.
