Limit holdem Question- OVERPAIRS

Postby MecosKing » Mon May 02, 2005 11:44 pm

Okay, so youve all probly had it happen before. Heres the HH:

Dealt to NoGooooooooo [ Qh Qc ]
Deceptitraan folds.
oliver1955 calls [$10].
SLOWDOWNSON folds.
Pockets11 folds.
jasonw1 raises [$15].
NoGooooooooo raises [$20].
oliver1955 folds.
jasonw1 calls [$10].
** Dealing Flop ** [ 6h, Jh, 7s ]
jasonw1 checks.
NoGooooooooo bets [$10].
jasonw1 calls [$10].
** Dealing Turn ** [ 9d ]
jasonw1 checks.
>You have options at Table 13302 Table!.
NoGooooooooo bets [$20]. <--------------------------THIS IS ME
jasonw1 raises [$40].
NoGooooooooo calls [$20].
** Dealing River ** [ Td ]
jasonw1 bets [$20].
NoGooooooooo calls [$20].
jasonw1 shows [ Ks, Js ] a pair of jacks.
NoGooooooooo shows [ Qh, Qc ] a pair of queens.
NoGooooooooo wins $208 from the main pot with a pair of queens.

So obviously i won with my overpair. My question is just this: I only check/called after he popped me on the turn. Now, i have seen a lot of guys that will 3 bet this hand and often win a pot that is way bigger than a single pair usually wins-- and if i had done that i couldve gotten an extra bet outta the guy. But, i usually only check/call the turn raise with a single pair, be it TPTK or an overpair even, unless there are very exigent circumstances like the board is 22A6 and I have AK and i get popped. Otherwise, i usually just check/call and sometimes i lose a bet and sometimes i save a bet (or two).

That board wasnt especially scary, but it also wasnt especially unscary- the only things he couldve had were JJ, 99, or maybe J9s, which that particular guy was not above raising, from the button. I figure no way he had KK or AA, because hed have 4bet me PF. 810s is a remote possibility, i guess too, but also highyly unlikely.

So, did i play this like a weak tight muppet, or did i do what i shouldve?

(later i realized that this was not a credible opopnent, but i only had had hint of that fact at the time the hand happened)

95% of the time I would have played it exactly as you did if it is any consolation. :) In the heat of the moment and the check raise it would take a true moment of poker genius to place him on the hand he had (which in hindsight is obvious) and squeeze out that extra bet.I mean sometimes (the other 5%)you can do it...you know those beautiful moments of pokerFLOW where you can sense every nuance, but day to day, while multitablin ,don't beat yourself up about it.Admirable that you set the bar so high.Cheers!
