What do you think of this turn raise?

Postby growlers » Thu Nov 02, 2006 10:26 pm

Live $4-8 game. What about this turn raise? Is this donktacular or good play? I was shredded verbally after the hand for the turn play.

I am on button with [Ah] [Tc] .
UTG limps, MP1 limps, I call on button, SB calls, BB checks.

Flop: (5 players, $20 pot)
[7h] [9d] [Js]

Both blinds check, UTG checks, MP1 bets, I call, SB folds, BB calls, UTG folds.

Turn (3 players, $32 pot)
[8h]

BB bets, MP1 raises to $16, I threebet to $24, BB cold calls us both, MP1 calls.

River:
[Kc]

BB checks, MP1 checks, I bet $8, BB folds, MP1 calls.

MP1 is a semi-loose aggressive player that loves to bet at flops with any piece or any draw (or nothing) and is not afraid to raise. But she is not a maniac.

Critique each street, but my interest in the hand is mostly the turn. I realize the flop call is very debatable, and probably wrong (although, again MP1 may have nothing here so even a 10 could be an out). Thanks!

Raise preflop.
Since you didn't, I'm probably folding flop.
If MP1 has nothing, then why do you need an out?
I don't understand what do you mean critique turn raise? As in should you have just called? That would've been terrible.
Out of curiosity do you not play limit much? I would not be listening to 4/8 live players at a table almost ever, much less when they are critiquing my play.

I don't see where you lost money with the raise. BB called your turn raise so you got 2 extra out of him.

With Mp1 raising the turn there is no way BB is leading out the river. He will check just like he did and fold when either of you bet.

possible river lines regardless of wether you 3-bet turn are:

check, bet, call, fold
check, bet, call, call
check, bet, raise, fold.

my point is that there where only 2 bets to be had from BB and you got them both on the turn. There remained the possibility that the turn would improve him enough to call on river, yet still have a 2nd best hand. Why wait until he has seen the river to face him with 2 bets?

If you and MP1 had only called on the turn, then maybe he leads again on rver, but that would be bad poker IMHO, and you probably lose bets because he is not going to call 2 back to him like he did on the turn unless he improved......and if he did improve, you missed the chance to maximize your winnings by passing on the turn raise.

Sorry I'm late to the party on this one growlers. Although you're obvioulsy working off a pretty good read here on thos woman but.

I don't mind the limping PF, like you I'd usually raise more often than not but again AT is a decent but not great hand and about the only person you might bump out is the SB, none of the limpers are folding so you're just jucing the pot that you'll need to hit a good flop on.

MT makes a good point about rasiing the flop....Assuming it'll get us a free card more often than not. If the woman you mentioned tends to bet/raise fairly often whether she has something or not might make it a waste of chips though. And after seeing the results she'll obviously bet whether she has something or not.

Turn I'm raising just like you did ESPECIALLY if she could have anything here. If we chop so be it, but if she's just as likely to be raising with something like 2 pair, or a set, or (if she's capable of semi bluffing with a 4 flush here) let's get our money in and make her pay the maximum we can here.
