When do you bail?

Postby Rude Dog » Thu Mar 02, 2006 12:16 pm

I've noticed a what may be a hole in my game...bailing. If I lead out, or open raise, and the flop gives me three to a straight, or three to a flush, and nothing else, I tend to bail. Paying and hoping for runner runner doesn't seem profitable to me. I get paid for other guys doing that a lot.

Something in an Ed Miller article seemed to say that I should gamble more. I can understand that in pots that are shaping up to be big ones, but, I generally let the other guys fight over the small ones.

On the other hand, if I pair anything on the flop, top or bottom, and am first to put money in, I bet it. It seems that giving them a chance to fold works pretty well, too. At the turn, if I still have bottom/middle pair only, and see some aggression, I will re-evaluate and lean towards bailing.

On the turn, if I have top pair/weak kicker I will probably just call a bet, top pair and good kicker I will probably raise a bet. Of course, sometimes I will raise with either just to find out what's going on.

I'm a little more cautious if my top pair is like a 6, or 9, with two to come, because an over card is sure to land, but, I will play it out and see.

Am I on firm ground here, or, being too timid?
