Do you bet this river?

Postby devilpancake » Wed Mar 08, 2006 3:17 am

Hi everyone. I've been reading this forum for a long time, but this is my first post. There is some great info here. Hopefully I don't get called a fish.

Button is a solid TAG.

Party Poker 5/10 Hold'em (8 handed)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [Th], [Jh].
3 folds, Hero raises, 1 fold, Button 3-bets, 2 folds, Hero calls.

Flop: (7.40 SB) [9h], [Td], [Qh] (2 players)
Hero checks, Button bets, Hero raises, Button calls.

Turn: (5.70 BB) [4s] (2 players)
Hero bets, Button calls.

River: (7.70 BB) [Qs] (2 players)
Hero bets, Button folds.

Final Pot: 8.70 BB

Results in white below:
Hero has Th Jh (two pair, queens and tens).
Outcome: Hero wins 8.70 BB.

I almost checked the river instead of firing again... but I had momentum so I kept betting! I thought he had AK, although that could just be wishful thinking since it's like the only hand I beat. :D

So do you check this river? He didn't reraise the flop or raise the turn, so it's hard to put him on a made hand. It's a nasty board and he would want to protect AA,KK and definitely raise up sets, etc by the turn, right? I'm just curious what you guys think. Do you think he had AK? Do you think checking the river is a better move here?

Fire away. Thanks in advance.

I'd say about 80% he had AK unless he is some real donk who could 3 bet and then call down with anything as some are prone to do. JJ is also a possibility. Yeah I bet this river, if he's not making any move after your flop raise to attempt to take this pot, then screw him, I'm gonna bet again on the river and hope that he calls me with his unimproved AK. The question should be what do you do if he raises? But from what I read around here, most people think that in these kind of situations if you would check and call, better to bet and fold to a raise; which btw is how I would play this river.

I think if you don't bet there is a chance he could swipe it from you with JJ. Other than that he is folding his AK. Like JJ said I really feel he has one of these two hands and that says you must bet this river.
Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

I guess two off the button that raise is alright, sometimes I'll fold this but at least you raised it, that was good. JJ isn't folding anyway, so I like the river bet, as a lot of times AK will call this river just to make sure you don't have AK too, and that would be weak to be bluffed off the same hand.

Thanks for all your comments. I really do appreciate it.

Golden - Hard to play the hand at all unless I'm raising it I think. But I agree that this is a fold or raise situation preflop. I like to play JTs with a few people in the pot already.

Thanks again.

Oops, misread this earlier, I thought it was .50/1 not 5/10. I don't think I need to be telling you about starting hand requirements in that case.

Welcome to the site by the way, there aren't enough limit posters around these parts and I'm sure you'll have plenty to contribute.

Thanks for the welcome. Yeah, I play 5/10 and sometimes 10/20... But I am always still learning and I don't think there's anything wrong with folding JT preflop here. Depends on the game I guess.

Welcome. This forum is mostly a NL forum (therefore the name), but it's also home to some of the best LHE players out there.

This play is the type of play I make frequently--it's truly a semi-bluff, but this is a fairly easy hand to read. If you check the river he bets and steals it from you. He could easily have AK, a flush draw, or even JJ.

Betting that river without him showing any aggression since the flop is clearly a +EV move when compared to checking.

Fire away!
