Aces up and I don't like it

Postby bkholdem » Mon May 16, 2005 6:08 pm

I'm looking for comments about the way I played this hand.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB =#A500AF(Villian)/ (9 handed)

UTG+1 ($41.46)
MP1 ($36)
MP2 ($39.5)
MP3 ($64.35)
Hero ($58.4)
Button ($53.15)
SB ($94.9)
BB =#A500AF(Villian)/ ($86.55)
UTG ($11.45)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [As], [Qh]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $0.50, 2 folds, MP3 calls $0.50, Hero calls $0.50, 1 fold, SB (poster) completes, BB =#A500AF(Villian)/ checks.

Flop: ($2.50) [3d], [Qd], [Js] (5 players)
SB checks, Villian checks, UTG+1 checks, MP3 checks, Hero bets $2.4, SB folds, Villian calls $2.40, UTG+1 folds, MP3 folds.

Turn: ($7.30) [9h] (2 players)
Villian checks, Hero bets $6, Villian calls $6.

River: ($19.30) [Ac] (2 players)
Villian checks, Hero checks.

Final Pot: $19.30

Results in white below:
Villian has 3s 3c (three of a kind, threes).
Hero has As Qh (two pair, aces and queens).
Outcome: Villian wins $19.30.

I was upset at myself for not considering villian for a better hand than I did. I had no read on him. I put the villian on a broadway type hand. I was a bit surprised by the turn call and checked the river even though I had aces up at that point fearing villian's KQ.

Did he play me figuring I would put him on a draw?

I am impressed you didn't lose more money on this hand as the villian was either way too passive or was trying to trap you on the river.

If I was you, I would have lost much more. In fact, I fault you for NOT betting the river. Why should you assume that your opponent can beat top two when he has done nothing but check and call? He could easily be on a hand like [Ad] [8d] and will pay off the river! There are no two cards that he could hold which would cause that Ace to improve his hand more than it improved yours! Bet this river. Everytime.

Dude never bets his set of 3s when there's a 2-flush on the flop? Wow. Write that down quick.

How much is a good value bet on this river? About $4-5? More? Less? I guess I want to bet an amount that even a half-decent hand will have trouble folding, but I'm not sure how much that is here.

Question for Droqqa and poker2006: If you value bet the river and the opponent check-raises, do you lay it down?
