Bad call here?

Postby stealthtt385 » Tue Jun 14, 2005 3:51 am

First of all, I won this hand. My opponent was your typical maniac, 80%vp$ip but with a twist. He had no aggression on the flop but on the turn he was listed as 5.0 after 300+ hands. I checked the turn even though it was a semi scare card and planned on check raising him becuse of my notes.

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

UTG+1 ($91.55)
MP1 ($15.35)
MP2 ($35.05)
MP3 ($24.35)
CO ($5.7)
Button ($40.6)
Hero ($37.79)
BB ($24.75)
UTG ($16.4)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Ts], [Th]. Hero posts a blind of $0.1.
UTG calls $0.25, 3 folds, MP3 raises to $0.5, 1 fold, Button calls $0.50, Hero (poster) raises to $1.65, 1 fold, UTG calls $1.50, MP3 calls $1.25, Button calls $1.25.

Flop: ($7.25) [4d], [2h], [9c] (4 players)
Hero checks, UTG checks, MP3 bets $2, Button calls $2, Hero raises to $6, UTG folds, MP3 folds, Button calls $4.

Turn: ($21.25) [Qd] (2 players)
Hero checks, Button raises $32.85 (All-In), Hero calls $30.04 (All-In).

River: ($84.14) [Kh] (2 players, 2 all-in)

Final Pot: $84.14

Results in white below:
Hero has Ts Th (one pair, tens).
Button has Ah 3h (high card, ace).
Outcome: Hero wins $81.33. Button wins $2.81.

As I said I won the hand, but a player at the table berated me for the next half hour because I called a 32 dollar bet with TT. I felt like it was a great read on my part, but this unkown player kept saying that I never should have called with such a weak hand. He also got a lot of the others invlolved who basically told me how stupid I was. In the end I was holding the $80, but I want to know from the more experienced people at BTP if I was incorrect making the call.

If you know he's gonna be aggressive on that turn...i really like it.

This play looks like a hardcore bluff...and you had the stats to back it up.

i love it.

i think your turn play was very well done. obviously it's a little gutsy, but i agree, w/ your read, that check was beautiful and you have to feel like there's a good chance you're ahead when he makes that bizarre overbet. are you at least 37% to win? i think clearly, yes.

oh how i love the poker cops - i hope you just played dumb and said something like 'i just felt it' or 'i had a big hand'.

That's why you are willing to pay $55 for pokertracker. Those guys think you're dumb because they didn't bother to seriously track their opponents' play down to the details. Turn aggression like that (especially relative to flop aggression) is a GREAT piece of information to have on a guy, and it paid off for you.

GREAT move.

The berating is because they have to have the nuts in order to have the guts to go after the maniac (and I don't think I've ever seen someone be completely passive on the flop and turn into a maniac on the turn - Turn Jeckle and Flop Hyde). You found a spot that you figured you would be ahead of most hands. Very nice.

By chance did the player stick around after you busted him?
