Big laydown - 1000NL

Postby droqqa » Fri Apr 01, 2005 7:14 pm

This hand just happened - I chose the check-raise on the flop here - I wanted to see how the betting went. When CO bet, I figured he was just pushing position - thought I could take the pot down right there. When he called, I wasnt going to bet the turn, but then the 8 hit. Now I only feared AQ and 33. When he comes over the top on the turn, I felt I had to fold, as gutwrenching as it was.

Thats a tough one. I wouldnt play the flop like that, but since you did and he still raised the turn all in, I really think he has 33.

Am I sure enough to fold getting 2-1 on my money? Im not sure.

Did I mention it was a tough one?

We actually discussed the hand afterward, and he revealed his hand. (I'll tell later after more replies) I would of been more inclined to call if I didnt face the prospect of another huge bet on the river. Check the stack sizes - we were about equal, each of us would of still had like 1800 after the turn action.

Oh, I thought he was all in. All the more reason not to check raise the flop. As a matter of fact I check/fold this flop every time when we're both that deep.

With stacks that deep, Im less convinced he has 33. But Im not willing to find out.

AJ wouldnt surprise me.

I think he also has A8 here. I really don't see 33 being played this way - I wouldn't expect him to just call the flop and then put in such a big raise on the turn. It is an odd line to take, at the very least. Either way, I think it's a pretty easy fold. As you said, you are facing another big bet on the river in all likelihood, and I'm not risking my entire stack to find out what would most likely be at best a split.

Since he was so deep I think you have to fold, for one reason and one reason only.....

If you're ahead, and he calls, he'll check behind on the river, getting you no more value. If you're ahead and you raise, he'll fold getting you no more value. If you're behind and either raise or call, you're set to lose another $1,500. You're in an extremely -EV situation.
