Cold calling a couple of raises with JJ out of pos

Postby Stoneburg » Tue Jul 12, 2005 10:36 am

Loose and somewhat aggressive table on Prima. I have a big stack and got the opponents, who are just below the $20 buy in, covered. Not much of a read on them, ie: they're not maniacs, or complete LP or TP's.

Wil008 : Folds
rossth : Folds
FlashNelson : Folds
fp4400 : Calls for 0.20
kera : Calls for 0.20
stefboost : Checks
deathroller : Raises for 1.00
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.90 [Jd] [Js]
Sto82 : Folds
fp4400 : Raises for 1.60
kera : Folds
stefboost : Folds
deathroller : Calls for 0.80
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.80

Easy call with JJ in the SB. When the original limper re-raises I of course get suspicious of AA, but I have also seen this move made with low/medium pairs. Nevertheless, I of course have to call when it gets back to me.

Flop $6 [6s] [7c] [3h]
------------------
Stoneburg : Checks
fp4400 : Bets 2.40
deathroller : Folds
Stoneburg : Raises for 4.80
fp4400 : Calls for 2.40

When he just calls the check-mini-raise I put him on either AK, or an over-pair that is smaller than AA/KK. He would have re-raised with AA/KK or a set I think.

Turn $15.60 [2c]
------------------
Stoneburg : Checks
fp4400 : Checks

When he checks behind he can't have AA/KK and QQ seems very unlikely. 88-TT seem most reasonable, or AK.

River $15.60 [8c]
------------------
Stoneburg : Bets 2.80

Well if he has something I can beat, like AK, TT or 99, he's not going to bet. If he can beat me, ie: he's been slowplaying a set (with a straight and flush draw out), he's going to raise. My bet is small enough that I can fold to an all-in raise since he has more than $12 left, but should also entice a call from Ace high or pretty much any pair.

I don't think QQ,KK,AA is out of the question. You check-raised him on the flop, so maybe he fears a set?

If you put him on AK or a pair smaller than yours why didn't you bet the turn? What if he had AcKc and you just gave him a free draw to a club or overcard? Or even just AKo for that matter.

I think your river bet is good.

I gave him the free card on the turn because I wanted information, the opportunity to fold, and to not build a pot with such a vulnerable hand. Not worried about the flush draw since I most likely think he has a pair, íf he has the damn AK in clubs... well good for him!

This is an easy flop call, but the re-raise really represents AA/KK--whether or not they have it. Hence, you're really drawing to a set, and the mini-raise gives you odds to do so.

As a result, I don't really like the checkraise here. It gets too much money in on a hand that you really are going to need to lay down to heat.

Objectively, you should check-fold imo. If your opponents are weak, then you can also bet pot at them. But if they call (or raise), that one bet needs to be the end of the line.

I think a check/raise is my only option on the flop if I want to continue the hand. I can't lead out since I will most likely be moved off the hand whether I am beat or not, and I really want to see what happens behind me before I committ more money. The mini-CR gives me a lot of information without committing me.

Result:
He called my river bet and flipped over 99.
