Completing in the SB

Postby MHFlush » Mon May 09, 2005 1:39 am

Before I ask my question I want to mention that I am a consistent winner at holdem so this is not a beginners question:

A lack of my game is that I do not know exactly what to do with 'weak' hands in the SB. I fold a lot because I do not like to play in the worst position with a weak hand. On the ohter hand, I got brilliant odds in the SB. Therefore, I would like to ask how many limpers you need to play the following hands:

Easy ones:
a) Any pair. I would always complete/raise.
b) Any Ace-suited. I would always complete/raise.

Difficult ones:
c) Ace-weak unsuited , e.g. A2o. Here I play the opposite. Against many limpers I fold because I am quite sure that somebody holds a better Ace. What to do vs. a late position limper?

d) Any suited. How many limpers do you need? 72s I would fold always because even against 5 limper I only win 11.2% of the time vs. the odds I get of 1:13. Sounds good, but I am in bad position do not forget that.

e) Any cards. How many limpers do you need?

On the any cards subject... if it folds to the button I play any two and bet any flop 2/3 of the pot. I figure it like this, the button and big blind are likely to not have anything, so I should try to take that money every time I'm in a position to do so. Button or BB being a calling station slows me down.

In an unraised pot, I will call with any connectors with 2 gaps, suited 3 gappers, unsuited overs like QTo, suited aces and kings Ax K9 and better, any pair. I want to take a peek see if I hit and if I miss get out.

In a raised pot, I change my criteria based on who is raising and tighten up from there, I call any ones raise with suited connectors and pairs, I call more loose raisers with suited overs, Axs, and connectors I generally fold Kxs, I may give AJ and up whirl and see if I have a three outer.

To raise depends on the number of limpers, but I raise a short field with big suited aces, TT and up. A larger field I raise on QQ and up, may limp AK hoping to trap someones weaker kicker, I almost always limp AQ AJ from the blind especially against a larger field, but raise it sometimes.

For the longest time I was playing my small blind tighter than the button, for the reasons you state, being out of position with bad kickers. I feel comfortable enough now to play from the SB and with junk and let it go when I need too. I was getting too deep with poor hands and losing. I'm quick to a hand go from out of position if it starts looking like it went south when I make a mediocre holding, but am not afraid to check raise with top pair no kicker if I know a late position player is likely to be betting middle pair or a draw.

If everybody was able to make a living off of their hobbies the world would be a much better place.
