Continuation bets - how much?

Postby Rode_Dog » Wed Jul 20, 2005 1:32 pm

In general, I pick a standard PF bet amout (4-6XBB depending on the room + 1BB for each limper) A re-raise (at any street) is typically the pot + any bets and calls. I will occasionally adjust up or down if I want to incent drawers or push them out hard.

My continuation bet (hit or miss) is the size of the pot. If the pot is $7.50, I bet $8. I will alter this from time to time intimidate or to look weak, but by and large it's pot size bets. If I raised PF, I am >80% to bet the flop and ~50/50 to re-raise.

I figure I own that pot unless someone is willing to tell me otherwise

Does anyone bet less or more than this? How often do you bet after a PF raise?

I tend to underbet the pot slightly. If it's $7.50 I'll bet $7. However, adjust this according to the texture of the flop. I'll bet from 1/2 to more than the pot depending on what the board looks like.

My raises preflop tend to be potsized, while my post-flop bet would tend to be in the 1/2 to 3/4 pot range. Eg. if I raise to 4, get 2 callers, then the flop is whatever, the pot is 12 bucks I'd lead out and bet 7-9

If it's headsup, much the same, I raise to 4 get one caller, the pot is around 8 bucks, the flop comes, then I'd bet 5 but usually 6.

Lots to think about here, thanks for the info.

The adjustment to 1/2 & 3/4 pot bets as the stakes rise is interesting. I moved up to $50NL full-time a couple of weeks ago and have pretty much stuck with the same size bets. $50NL seems to be slightly tighter on average and has a slightly higher % of decent players. From what I've been told, $25NL-$100NL are not vastly different. Above $100NL, things apparently change quite a bit.

I think pot-size is in general a very good rule of thumb.

I don't have current data as to how often, and viewing that statistically is a bit problematic imo. It's all a question of table texture (and at any table, the number of players in the hand, the kind of board that flops, etc. need to be taken into consideration). Against some players, I think "never" is great (hey, if they're still calling my continuation bet with AA, consistently, why get out on a limb with unimproved AK?), but against others, I think all but the worst kinds of boards should be followed up by a continuation bet.

I do think the "weak continuation bet" move (slightly less than 1/2 pot) has some value, but I think you need to introduce it into your game on monsters (big set or such) before EVER throwing it in on a hand that you intend to fold to heat. The other players at the table need to fear enormous strength on that kind of bet before you can make it on weaker hands.
