full house: how to extract value

Postby cholo loco » Sun Feb 20, 2005 9:56 am

1-2 Pstars
i have 66 and complete behind 3 other from the SB. flop comes down 245r. i bet 8 and the big blind calls.i have no notes or read on this player. the turn is a 6 completing the rainbow. i check my set for a few reasons. first i think that it is very likely that he called the flop with a 3 in his hand. second is that i want to be able to draw at my full house and a bet may make him raise enough that i cant. also if he dosent have a three then he is probably drawing dead or close to it so i dont mind letting him take a free card/.
ok, so he bets 12 and i call.
the river pairs the 2.
this seems like a good spot for a check raise but if he checks it down id be sick. if he has a 3 though ive shown nothing that should worry him even with the board pairing.
if he has anything other than a three it is hard to imagine him calling but he may try to represent it. if he has a full house we will probably get it all in regardless of what i do.
i guess my problem is that if he has a three he may do something crazy like stack off with me, and if he dosent i probably wont get any action anyways.
this actually seems like a good time for either a check raise or an unusually large oversized bet.
any comments, suggestions would be appreciated on how you would go about extracting value on this river.

There are any number of way to play it depending on the opponent. Not knowing anything about him, I would probably lead out with a pot sized bet and see what happens.
I would be too worried he would check behind. He will probably still call with a straight.

yeah ice that is what i did. after he quickly called i started thinking about the hand and wasnt so sure that was the best way to play it. i think in this situation a better play would be an overbet as he is likely to think i have the same straight or am making a desperation bluff. anyways i find a lot of beople in these lower games (2-4 and below) have a hard time throwing away a hand to a paired river card when they have a straight or flush.
anyhow, just curious what others thought of an oversiaze river bet. i guess its not that interesting a hand but i do think its a spot where settling for a potsized bet may not be good enough

I think you played it fine. Potsize bet or bigger. A good player will check behind with the straight if he thinks you are a good player too. And I think you are right: not many 1/2 players will fold a straight/flush to a paired river card.

I also play 1/2 at Stars... Who are you there?
