How to play this big set??

Postby kennyg » Wed Apr 20, 2005 10:30 pm

1/2 NL Prima
Villain has $303 and I have him covered.

UTG limps. I get [Js][Jc] in MP1. I raise to $10. Only villian (MP2) calls. I once again have no read... (I don't pay enough attention anymore.) :)

FLOP $25
[2d][Qd][Jd]

Interesting flop. I have a set of jacks. I lead for $20. Opponent raises for $48. I call. I want to see what develops on the turn before I invest more chips.

TURN $121
[2d][Qd][Jd][6c]

I check. Villian bets $50. I check-raise to $150. Opponent moves in for his last $100. I call. (at this point..even if he has a flush I still have outs and more then 5-1 odds..). I also think I still may be winning the hand.

Results later.

Well played, badly played? Give me thoughts and comments please.

I like it. But I would probably reraise the flop because I would not expect him to raise with a flush there.

Boy, I don't know how to follow stoolpushers wonderful post, but I'll try... I think you played it fine... I also think you're ahead here... he probably has something like [Ad] [Qc] or somethin like that... The only danger is that if a 4th diamond hits, he could win w/ a freakin pair of 3s if the 3 was a diamond...

I don't think I would've reraised the flop, mostly because you would've had to raise it to what, like $125, which would mean you will have invested about half your chips in a hand that you could easily be behind in... what if you reraise, he calls, and a diamond hits the turn... you're phucked... at least this way, if it hit, he could get out more cheaply...

He held QQ and I lost set over set for the 3rd time this week. lovely. :)

My brother was watching and we both thought of QQ but without a read on the guy, I thought I held the best hand. He could have held anything, from 22 to JQ, to AA with the [Ad]. I wanted to play it agggressively on the turn if another diamond didn't hit, which is what I did.

My brother thought I should just call the turn..he wasn't as confiedent about my hand, for whatever reason. If i did only call the turn.I would have saved a ton of money (like $200)..as another diamond fell...which would have slowed both me and my opponent down.

What do you guys think about it now that you know the results? Should I have altered my play?

Nope I still like the way you played it, unless he has a baby flush he doesnt raise the flop, so this makes me think I'm ahead. The turn is a good card for your hand, QQ is the only real hand that I can put him on that beats you other than outside chance of 56, 67, 78 of diamonds. There are quite a few hand that you have beat, [Ad] Q, QJ, KQ, [Ad] J, KQ, AA, KK [Kd] Q. Set over set sucks but I think you played this correctly.
