Love hate relationship with NLHE

Postby AlamdeaMike » Thu Jul 21, 2005 11:46 am

I sometimes just love playing this game and sometimes it drives me crazy. Not really but almost.

I need some advice on this hand.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (9 handed)

Button ($327.40)
SB ($218.30)
BB ($65)
UTG ($254.30)
UTG+1 ($198)
Hero ($102.20)
MP2 ($54.75)
MP3 ($39)
CO ($112.80)

Preflop: Hero is MP1 with [Ks], [Kd].
2 folds, Hero raises to $8, 2 folds, CO calls $8, 3 folds.

I think that $8 is a standard raise.

Flop: ($19) [9d], [3d], [Js] (2 players)
Hero bets $26, CO calls $26.

The flop is lower than my kings but there are 2 diamonds so I decide to overbet and try to shut down any draws. I am not sure if a smaller bet would have been more effective.

On the flop I am at least a 70% chance to win aginst most hands, like AJ and a dog only to AA and dead to JJ.

Turn: ($71) [Jd] (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $78.8 (All-In)

Darn the luck another Jack. But, it is a diamond. Did he call me with a Flush draw? Does he really have a Jack?

I have put $38 in the pot and now need to put in $68 more to see if he is bluffing and/or snag a diamond which may win.

What to do?

Fold?

the over bet is a mistake. The reason being if the diamond hits you lose more money. Bet 3/4 of the pot and he still doesn't have odds to call, and if he does and hits his hand? well there is nothing you can do about it. But over betting the pot only means you lose more money when he hits

1/2 - 3/4 should only give him 3 to 1 odds, not enough to call

I don't overbet the pot usually unless its a time where I have a big hand and I know someone can't get away from their hand. I would just stick to my standard 2/3 to Pot bet on the flop but I would have to check fold that turn. The only hands you are beating are another pocket pair that decided to take one off and then bluff. Any other hand that would call that bet got there but QT. Not worth the risk and if he's doing it with a low PP or QT, you'll find a better time to bust him.

Out of position, I slow that down on the flop and maybe a 3/4 size bet.

As the turn fell, I'd fold.

Yup - guys - The mistake that I made was to over bet the pot. I had to fold and lose more on the hand that I needed to. He could have been bluffing with [Ad] and a Queen or King but a fold was the right move.

The over bet might have said AK to him. A 2/3 - 3/4 pot bet followed by a check fold was the correct way to play this hand.

Thanks for the advice.

I very seldom over bet the pot - I am very careful to bet about 2/3 - 3/4 on any flop that I decide to play.

I was on two tables and did not give it the right amount of though. This time I wanted to make it clear that I had a good hand - mistake.
