AA on a low coordinated flop

Postby briachek » Wed Jul 06, 2005 1:22 am

villian is other solid player on the table. His flop call was danger and took the free card on the turn. Smells of a set that boated on the river and he wanted me to think he was buying it. Easy fold?

The way you played it, yeah I fold the river. But your turn play is what guaranteed this fold. There are a lot of situations which would call for checking the turn when you've bet the flop with your AA but I don't think this is one because you give him the chance to bluff the river too easily with that kind of board. Yeah, I think you were dead in this hand, but all in all, that's not the point. Let's say you bet something at the turn after being checked to, I don't care how much, as long as it's a resonable bet and he flat calls again when the board is showing 4 to a straight which would be hard to put you on, but never the less is existent. Now if he lead-moves all-in at the river, regardless of what falls besides maybe a 3 and especially on a card that pairs the board, it's a certainty that you're beat and the fold is much easier. Obviously in this situation all that would have done is cost you $12 or whatever you went with as a turn bet because you did indeed fold the river but I think in the long run you should bet that turn especially since you are apparently giving this guy some credit for intelligence thus increasing the likelihood that he could all-in bluff the river against you.

that's a big bet. I might have called. I think he is holding something weak. Most players (almost all) aren't good enough to move in there with the intention of "making it look like a bluff." You induced with the turn check. The more I think about it, I hink you have the best hand.

but still...

this isn't a horrible fold or anything. This is a marginal call.
