Pocket 2s to the rescue...

Postby MVPSPORTS » Wed May 25, 2005 5:44 pm

Sorry, but I still can't get the hand converter to work from Party... Not sure why...

Anyways, guess the Party Poker people wanted to make up for my royal screwing the whole day, and handed me this hand... Do you think I maximized the profits...? I knew the one guy was gonna call, but didn't want 2 chasers in the hand... Was this good thinking, or should I have slowed down and tried to get SB in the pot and pushed the flop?

BTW... please don't give me crap for playing pocket 2s... I know they generally suck, but
I had a good feelin... :D

I think you played it great the whole way. Once there's a lot in the pot and a huge number of potential callers, I think continuing to push is a good idea. If they do call, you're probably still the favorite, but if you have all kinds of draws out there, someone can easily hit (although the set takes a very significant number of outs away from both straight and flush draws.

My only critique wouldn't be the hand at all, but the "forgive me for playing pocket 2s." I think if you're not playing those pretty regularly, you're missing out on some serious potential. Sets are really the deadliest weapons one can get imo, and I think you need good reasons to miss an opportunity for one.

I know... I play basically any pair... I just hear people saying all the time that 2s are crap because, if you don't trip, they're basically meaningless... I really don't understand that thinking, cause if I don't trip w/ most low pairs, I'm done w/ them anyway...

The reasons I dislike 22's are:

- They are the most lilkely to end up over-seted (very expensive)
- They are unable to over-set anyone else (very profitable)
- Other than hitting quads you'll never have the nuts, and rarely have people drawing dead
- Whatever you hit will be the worst possible (idiot end of straight, lowest flush...)

In your hand your opponent had several outs when the money went in, any T or 8 will break you. If you instead had 88's vs him having T2, he'll be drawing much thinnner.

My numbers for 22-44 are in the red in PT so I'm obviously biased...

LOL I', $197 up with 22 this week - any set vs a paired ace on the flop or an overpair can be very profitable and of course you can boat the nut flush too (and that's almost always a stack off job vs the chumps at the <$200 tables).

I like your play alot. Good job. If the other guy will call $17 but then fold to your reraise, he shouldn't have called the $17 and you got some dead money in there. Also, I won't give you any crap for playing 22 because this is what you are looking for.

What I will give you crap for is not being able to work the converter. Come on. You are a smart guy. :D

lol

I'm beginning to think a lot of these players who'll raise and play 55 or 66 are strongly tournament-influenced. When the blinds are huge in a tournament, you can indeed try playing them unimproved (with the intention of getting HU with overcards are just stealing the blinds), but it makes no sense at all in a cash game imo. I find it very difficult to actually play out the hand against overcards in a tournament anyway--usually pretty much drop them in tournaments, too, if I can't steal worthwhile blinds or such. But there are a lot of times where 66, I think, is a pretty decent short-stack all-in hand in a tournament.
