NL Project: $1500 in 2 weeks

Postby Mad Genius » Wed Mar 23, 2005 1:27 pm

It's been a while since I stopped being a serious poker player. But two things have led me to reconsider:

1. I have too much free time on my hands
2. I need money

Well, the second point isn't entire true. But I go back to school in the fall and I wanna have enough saved up to last me through most of next year. Right now I only have a part-time job and it sure would be nice to compliment that with some poker winnings again, right?

I've decided to go with a 2-week long No Limit project playing 3-tables of $100NL on PartyPoker. I know that place is the devil, but quite frankly, that site is still the biggest aquarium in the world and that's all I care about. Maybe GC competes, but I've given up trying to get that site to work on my computer for now. I will be transferring $1500 from my Stars account to Party to get me started. 15xbuyin should be enough to weather the bad streaks. I've optimistically set my goal at 15BB/100 hands which means I will have to play 10K hands over the next two weeks to reach my goal of $3000. I am gonna try to get in 1000 hands per day though so if I don't win that many BB/100 hands I will still hit my goal of $1500.

I don't have any stats/notes on the Party players but will be doing my best to take notes on everyone that I play against. My plan is to play an extremely tight-aggressive ABC game, similar to what kenny was doing earlier when he was 4-tabling the $100NL games on GC. No bluffing, no fancy plays, etc. which I won't like, but I'm gonna try to stick to it. I will try to give daily reports of hands and results here on BTP to keep me on track and hopefully spark some discussion. I don't know how much fun this will be but I am very goal-oriented so I figure setting a specific goal will help me focus when I don't want to play. If by the end of two weeks I have hit my goal AND I'm not sick of playing online poker (doubtful), I may do the same thing at the $200NL tables. If not, I'll go ahead and use my winnings to play some big MTTs or cash it out.

I'll try to get started tonight. Let's see if I can work my magic. :)

I think thats very a very realistic goal. My prediction is that you fall a little short of your total hand goal, but that you still make the $1500 mark.

For comparison purposes only. Since Party changed the blind structure at Party, I have 5000 hands at the $200NL level.

Ive won 24.2BB/100 hands so far for a total of about $2400. I dont expect that win rate to stay so high. Im sure it will taper off to around 15BBs. Im quite sure you will be in that same neighborhood.

There will be some serious asskicking next time my thread gets hijacked.

Iceman I really think you oughta play 5/10. In terms of how much you win I'm sure you win more than enough at 200NL and 400NL but I think your game could hit another gear when you start playing 5/10 regularly. I think you would really enjoy the increased level of competition, and even though your winrate might drop off a bit, it would be more than made up by the fact that the BB is a lot bigger.

Playing ABC poker dosent mean you dont bluff. It just means you bluff at the right times, usually called "picking your spots". Yes, ABC poker is extremelly tight poker but that dosent mean only premium hands. ABC gives you a general guidleline (unique to the individual), such as only playing suited connectors in late position or in middle position with 2 other limpers. ABC to me is folding A10,KJ, QJ and the rest of the trouble hands in the first 3 spots. ABC is calling draws whe the odds are right and folding when they are wrong. ABC means betting enough to punish your opponents on draws. ABC players generally wont make big bets based just on what they know about their opponents and usually need the cards when the big bets come out.

Even though I play 98% ABC I aspire to do what Howard Lederer says he does, paraphrasing, "Stick to a basic strategy that wins but every once in a while try to find profit by deviating from this strategy, pick your spots"

Good Flops
