Push here a good play?

Postby Big Boiler Dawg » Sat May 10, 2008 11:11 pm

Playing .10/.25 FR NLHE at Bodog. My stack was $9.22 (I usually buy in for around half the max when I join a table). I have only been at the table a short time, no reads on the players.

MP joins table and post $0.25, I'm dealt TT in the CO.

UTG folds, UTG+1 raises to $1.10, all fold to MP, who calls for $0.85. All fold to me, I push all-in, $9.22.

Both UTG+1 and MP have me covered. Is this a good play?

My thinking was that UTG+1 most likely raised with two big cards, and MP had a small pair, and called trying to flop a set. So by pushing, I would have a slight advantage on UTG+1 (if called), and a big one on MP. If they folded, so much the better.

Or would it have been better just to call and try to flop a set?

Comments appreciated.

Your stack size makes this really awkward, I think a push is fine. Having less than 40% of the table max really takes away a lot of your ability to actually play poker, to play short stack profitably you are going to end up all in preflop quite a bit and not just with AA or KK. You cant really 3 bet here, raising to $3 is either going to get UTG to shove and you have to call or its going to get you 1 or 2 callers in which case you pretty much put all your money in on any kind of decent flop. Either way you might as well get it in preflop if you are going to call a preflop shove or shove most flops.
