Set over set (sigh)

I know you're supposed to go broke here, but I really, really feel like I should have folded.

Background: BB (Villain) is mostly a very solid player, at least for the $20 level I'm playing at. He's a regular and always multi-tables, and usually wins. I only caught him making one or two fishy plays in the past -- which is way fewer than I have made myself in the same time frame! In chat one time he said he has played as high as $1000 games, and though I'm not sure I believe that, it's not impossible. (He never said he WON at those games. :) ) He's solid and pretty smart.

10/20c NL at GC. I am UTG and limp with [8c][8d]. I have $25 or so, Villain has me covered. A couple more limpers, then the BB (Villain) raises to $1. I call, MP calls, rest fold. $3+ in the pot. Flop is [Ah][8s][3d]. BB leads out for $2+, I just call hoping not to knock out MP. MP calls. About $10 in the pot now. Turn is [7c], a total blank. BB leads for full pot, $10 -- that's half a buy-in. I think for all of two seconds before raising the minimum, which basically puts me all-in. MP has a shorter stack and is all-in, BB pushes his last few bucks, I call. And of course BB has AA and there goes 1+ stack for me. (MP had AK.)

I didn't think nearly long enough. I knew the second I saw the 8 on the non-coordinated flop that I wanted all the money in the middle and I was willing to lose set over set. But at the same time, right when he made that very large turn bet, I knew KNEW KNEW he had the aces. And if I had just taken the time to think about it, this is what I would have said to myself: No other hand makes sense there. He's a solid player and does NOT bet that big with AK when he's been called twice on the flop. There were no two pair hands that made sense. No way he's bluffing with KK. No way he raised like that preflop with 77 or 33. AA is his only possible holding here.

Again, I know set over set = broke, but let me ask anyway. Are there players you respect enough that you would fold your set of 8s here?

In a word... NOPE... he had the only one hand that could beat you... If the board had a flush or straight, I would consider it... But, with this crap, there are WAY more people playing AK,AQ that way than the unfortunate luck of having set over set...

No, you are *definitely* supposed to go broke here, against any opposition. Villain has AK way more often than AA, and likely plays it exactly the same.

Mission accomplished, well done! :)

Calling in this spot is more of a play for limit poker I believe. The board looks awesome for a set of 8's but I believe you should let the cat out of the bag on the flop. Hopefully someone will play back with just a single Ace and you can get all of the money in for a big pot.

You only KNEW he had aces because when you saw the hand on the river your mind said, "Hey, I was right, this is a worse case scenario situation" I may have been able to fold this hand if there was a bet and an overcall from 2 very tight players but this dosent sound like one of those spots.

Everybody loses a stack in this spot. It's just one hand, re-up and move on!
