44 in the SB flopping a gutshot

Postby Stoneburg » Wed Jul 20, 2005 3:47 pm

Standard loose Prima table. Opponent is semi-Loose and very Aggressive. He's been raising a lot preflop but with 'real' hands he'll make a 'real' raise, not a miniraise. I have $20 and he has me covered.

Unzip : Folds
kimso : Folds
Wrath3 : Folds
BujuB : Folds
Chris-Bg : Raises for 0.40
nister : Folds
dan1010 : Folds
Wiseymad : Calls for 0.40
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.30 [4s] [4h]
Axe_Axion : Folds

Flop $1.40 [5h] [3h] [Ac]
------------------
Stoneburg : Checks
Chris-Bg : Bets 1.00
Wiseymad : Calls for 1.00
Stoneburg : Calls for 1.00

Turn $4.40 [2h]
------------------
Stoneburg : Checks
Chris-Bg : Bets 2.00
Wiseymad : Folds
Stoneburg : Raises for 6.00
Chris-Bg : Raises for 30.00
Stoneburg : Went all-in 12.38

I don't know if I can justify this play in hindsight.

You need something like 11:1 implied odds ... it's $1 so you need to win another $11. You've $20 behind... so the call isn't immediately dumb.

If you were heads up (so you could bluff the flush, or actually be ahead, or be able to represent the ace if he slows down) it would be OK, though no shame in folding especially out of position.

Once the other guy calls, it's a fold for me as one might have the flush draw, the other be ahead (etc etc).

[EDIT] Out of interest, are you considering moving up limits? You seem strong for 20NL.

I am considering moving up but...

- My bankroll is still too small. Right now I have about $400. This is because I have been living off it up until this month. Now my unemployment insurance has kicked in and I can let it grow.

- I'm doing awfully well at my current level. 32bb/100 in may, 42bb/100 in June, and 21bb/100 so far in july with a very bad start.

- I've finally gotten 'comfortable' at my current level. I'm not a gambler, I'm a wuss. I don't like risking my money. If I move up, I will feel uncomfortable again.

- I've tried higher levels a few times, but not too recently. My impression was that the games were *much* tighter. I like my tables as loose as possible.

- I still feel I have lots of things I can improve. Playing at this level is much cheaper practise.

Once my BR is past $500 or so.. which it should be in a couple of days, I guess I'm going to have to try the $50 tables.

I dont like your call on the flop at all. There is no reason to call a bet with 44 here, you are looking at a 3 card gut shot since you really dont want to see another heart. If you do hit it there is a 4 card str8 on the board and most players arent going to pay you off.
