Is this as bad as it looks?

Postby HopyMSU » Sat May 28, 2005 4:26 pm

This happened the other day and I wanted to share it so everyone knows EXACTLY what to do in this situation in the future ( ). I was pretty new to the table, but I knew that BB was pretty loose, and looking to be LAG. I just shook my head when the hand was done...

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (6 max, 6 handed)

CO ($249.58)
Button ($33.15)
SB ($115.95)
BB ($299.45)
Hopy ($208)
MP ($209.45)

Preflop: Hopy is UTG with [8h], [8s]. SB posts a blind of $1.
Hopy raises to $8, 2 folds, Button calls $33.15 (All-In), 1 fold, BB calls $31.15, Hopy folds.

Flop: ($75.30) [8c], [Kc], [9h] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Turn: ($75.30) [5c] (2 players, 1 all-in)

River: ($75.30) [3c] (2 players, 1 all-in)

Final Pot: $75.30

Results below:
BB has 3h 5s (two pair, fives and threes).
Button has Th Td (one pair, tens).
Outcome: BB wins $75.30.

The discussion after the hand...

#2104033223: IDIOT wins $73.3 from the main pot with two pairs, fives and threes.
VICTIM: lucky f444ker
IDIOT: pot odds sorry man
HOPY: pot odds?
IDIOT: i knew u wouldn't call so I will go heads up with that hand when he is all in for 30
HOPY: ahhh, I see
IDIOT: thats the only reason

So, if ever you're debating whether or not to call a reraise all in from the BB with unsuited junk getting around 1.4:1 on your call...

Initially this looks pretty bad...but is it really? The questions:

1) Is this play from BB as bad as it looks?
2) What factors DIDN'T BB consider in making his call?
3) Should I have called if BB folded? Should I have overcalled regardless?

I will be interested to hear from you all :) .

Umm... does "idiot" know the meaning of pot odds...? He called $31.15 to win $42??? I was gonna say at least they were sooooted, but nope... It's amazing how much crappy play is rewarded on Party...

BTW... I'm not sure that I wouldn't have called that if I were you... it was only another $25 to win $75, with a mid-PP in a shorthanded game...? I've seen people push with worse...

I think what BB forgot to consider in his play is that 1. he was betting WAY too much money... and 2. that he has the worst cards in creation... I guess there's always hope for the runner, runner, runner, runner 5high flush...

BB's play was pretty unredeemingly terrible. Paid $29 to see $46. If everything works out: you fold, and button simply has two overs, he's still a 2-1 dog. But that's not even considering if the button has him dominated, and/or you come in/over the top.

Maybe he was trying an image play, who knows.

I wouldn't overcall there w/ 88. I think you'd be essentially playing for the set and stacks aren't deep enough to justify that. Especially if BB's a LAG, are you really prepared to play a huge pot w/ just 88?
