Trips middle kicker vs trips random kicker

Postby Smokin'Al » Thu Jun 09, 2005 12:21 pm

This one troubles me...

200NL 6 max on Party. Towards the end of a horrendous session. I'm dealt [9d][7d] and limp in MP. Button limps, and BB checks. Both were OKish ... a bit loose and random but nothing ridiculous.

Flop [Kc][7h][7s], $7. BB checks, I check (I think button might have been aggressive, so I was going for a check raise). Button bets $7, BB raises to $30.

OK ... so let's pretend we're 100% certain that BB has a 7. But he could have any kicker at all of course.

So I can fold (but at the moment I'm like 66% likely to be ahead), raise (but that might fold the weaker kickers), or call. What's the best line here and for the turn/river?

The turn and river are offsuit 5 and 8s, and BB bets 1/2 his stack on each street.

Best line?? Thoughts much appreciated.

I like raising to about $80 on the flop here. If he comes over the top you can get away from it, and if he just calls you can be fairly certain your kicker is ahead, and bet for value on the turn or the river. If you just call all the way down, you have no way of knowing if you are ahead or not.

I still cant forget that hand were I didnt call preflop with T7 and you called with 97 and won a big pot. Oh well. You cant win what you dont put in the middle.

This hand. Stack sizes? Probably full stacks.

How can we be 100% sure he has a 7. He checkraises a bet from the button. Some players will do this with any two if the button is aggressive... And he makes a very big raise where there are no draws. I think he has a king.
I call the flop (we dont want him to fold worse hands) and then raise the turn or river. Or just call down if I'm not comfortable.

(He had $200 I had him covered)

Yeah I suppose it's not 100% he has a 7. But it definitely felt that way when he raised ... perhaps because I'd been running so bad in the session.

I don't think your average 200NL Party player has it in them to check raise here without a 7, though.

Also ... I think any decent 7 calls a reraise here. Why raise with no draws out there?

OK .. so I call flat the the turn. He now knows I have a 7. $74 pot. Turn is a 5 and he bets $80. Can I fold yet?!

ps Kalle - T7 might have featured in this hand too :(
