Effect of a poker site on your play

Postby iceman5 » Sun Oct 30, 2005 7:26 pm

Everyone seems to have favorite places to play. Alot of people think the players are better at UB and Full Tilt. Some people say PokerStars is tough.

Do any of you track your win rate seperately by poker site and do you have significantly different win rates at certain sites?

I think the players are probably close to the same skill level at all sites, although I do seem to play better at some sites. For example, since I stated playing 6 max, I have a little over 4K hands. I have a little over 2K hands at each of 2 sites. My win rate at 1 site is 17PTBBs and the other one Im slightly negative. This is probably just a coincidence since I have small samples so far, but I do seem to have more confidence and control over the table at the site Im winning at. The layout of the sites are different. At one site the 6 players are evenly spaced around the table. At the other the 6 players are crowded towards the bottom of the screen (like a full ring table with no players at the 4 seats that would normally be at the top of the screen). The chips are different colors, they look more reaslistic at one site...ect

I think all of this and more has an effect on me mentally and it affects how I play. Or maybe Im just crazy and Im running hot at one site and cold at the other.

The problem is that the site Im winning at has no rake rebates and I have a sweet deal at the other. The site where Im slightly negative
, Ive been winning at for a long time at full ring and Ive never had problems mentally (like Ive had at party with their cartoon software). Maybe the 6 max there is tougher, or maybe Im running cold there, but it seems to be a big coincidence that every time Im doing only so so, and then I switch immediately to the other site, I start winning right away.

Thoughts?

I DO track different sites, but am at work (due to power outage) and can't get to my PT... BUT, I can say that I DON'T think the players are the same on all sites, even though they may all have the same skill level... Players on different sites play different ways, and we can adapt to certain styles better than others... For example, I KILL Stars and their soft weak/tight styles... But, for whatever reason, I just GET killed at UB, and am barely over break even at Party with the nutsos...

I definitely think that where you play can have as large an affect on your winrate as table selection...

Not an effect on my play, but on my winnings?

This is bizarre and I have no explanation for it. I play at PokerStars and Full Tilt, SNGs. Now, some days I can't seem to get anything going at all on one, but I can go to the other and clean up. Rarely do I win on both in the same day, and rarely lose on both. It doesn't matter on which I start, it works the same way every time. I win on one, and switch to the other, and lose.

It's very weird and there's no reason for it to happen. It could make one superstitious.

I have wondered about this myself. I don't want to succumb to superstition, but it often seems that I do mch better at certain sites.

Games are different at all sites and that is a fact. That has an impact on anyone´s game and profit.

I used to have an awful time at party since I realized the only problem was that I wasnt being selectively aggressive. They dont seem to know where the fold button is and that was costing me a lot of money.

There is also some kind of "thing" on the ways things work out at different levels. For example, I see that in party is either you get all things right or all things wrong. I have played on other sites where my win rate is lower but it is so steady it makes me think of an actual hourly rate and see the results regardless how many hours I play (absolute poker).

These are my stats

Bodog 12.8PTBB/100
Party 11.8PTBB/100
Prima 8.65PTBB/100
Absolute Poker 7.95PTBB/100
Ultimate Bet 2.5PTBB/100

As weird as it sounds, AP is the place where I like to play the most because THERE is were I have almost no variance. That is due to the fact that that is the site with the biggest rocks by far.

UB, well, I think that site simply hates me. I had the worse run of my life there: More than 7K hands of the most unbelieveable hands. I didnt lose much but I dont even know how I didnt lose it all. I dont know how is it that I am not losing there. I have notoiced a great amount of fish there, but also, there are more than usual good players. I have compared the quantities of UA-LA-TA to all other sites and in terms of %, you find more players of the solid styles there than anywhere else....by much. That said, I dont think that´s been the main reason I am not winning there. It´s been a terrible luck. I´ve played more than 25K hands there and it´s simply undescribeable.

There are objectives factors that have an impact on our play. I have noticed, for example, that I have a hard time on tables loaded with LAGs. I win from them, at least most of the times, but when I am n0ot getting big hands and they keep pushing me off, I start playing badly. That has impact on our winnings, of course. I dont really think that graphics or anything else has an impact on my game.....

Alex, how on earth do you know what your PTBB/100 is on Bodog since it's not PT compatible?

I think the IMPORTANT question for Alex is... Why the hell would you play anywhere else when you're bangin away at 12.8bb/100 at Bodog...

Of late I seem to be losing everywhere but cryptologic pretty much (well, Prima I'm winning too, less so). Pokerstars used to be my best site of the "big boys" but i;ve gone on a collosal losing streak and really feel the games have tightened up to the extent it'll take me ages to get back what i've lost there in the last 6 months (probably not, but it feels like it!) so I've kinda quit for now.

I have some thoughts on this, i'll try and remember to post them in the next coupla days when I have time!

Bodog usually deals a little over 60 hands per hour per table. Say 60 to be conservative.

At $100 NL, a PTBB is $2.00.

12.8 PTBB/100 = $25.60 / 100 hands.

One table: $25.60 * 60 / 100 = $15.36 / hour.

So two tables = $30.72 / hour

Three tables = $46.08 / hour.

Are you doing that well, Alex? If so, mega congrats to ya. 8-)

Bodog also has very fast software. It's often been closer to 70 hands/hour.

Paradise, OTOH, is closer to 35-40. Part of why I quit playing there.

If these numbers seem high ... maybe people take longer to make decisions at Omaha?
