A funny hand

Postby Rhound50 » Fri Dec 24, 2004 12:37 am

I know we dont have a bad beat spot on this site but this is a pretty funny beat. I am playin 68 in the BB a couple of limpers in front of me. I call flop the nut str8, with two diamonds on board. I check and to my dismay it checks around the board pairs on the turn. I bet out this time trying to figure out what I'm up against get 3 callers which doesnt make me happy. The board pairs again with the 3rd diamond on the river. I check and a bet and a reraise later I fold. I curse a little under my breath and fold, talk about the worst possible cards on the turn and river. Some days the cards just like to laugh at you, today was one of those days.

Hope everyone has a Merry X-mas, happy chanuka, good Quanza or anything else you may be celebrating this time of year.

You said "I am playin 68 in the BB a couple of limpers in front of me. I call flop the nut str8, with two diamonds on board."
If you flop the "nut straight" on the flop(I am assuming you got a flop of 7 5 4), you should try to protect it.

If this is limit, you need to bet here.
If this is NL, I would suggest a pot sized bet or higher(all in? What are the stack sizes at the table?).
If this was an attempt at a check raise, were you sure that the others involved with this pot would bet with a flush draw, what kind of read did you have on these players?

A low straight might get higher connecting cards on the later streets to counterfeit your hand.
For example, someone who always limps with 6 9, because it is his "lucky hand", and the turn brings an 8.

The board pairs on the turn, you lead out and get 3 callers, they could still be on the flush draw, or chasing with 2 pair. Someone could be playing 5 4 suited and just caught the miracle turn card, and just call wanting to keep you in the pot.

Then the board pairs again on the river, and 3 diamonds are now on the board. The perfect situation for the 5 4 s player, I would be putting in my whole stack here, if I were in his shoes, and hope that I am not against the bigger boat (77755)..

You are now facing many full house and flush possibilities.
A bet and a reraise would make me fold in your situation, it could just be A high with 2 pair versus King high(If this were Party), but a boat is not out of the realm of possibility, your straight is probably toast.

Not a bad beat, just unlucky.

I agree that some days the cards will just laugh at you.
All in (short stacked in a MTT) with AA, and called by the big stack with K 4 off.
Flop is J 4 4, and no help from turn and river.

Happy holidays to you as wel!
Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.

It was a 2/4 NL game with a $100 buy in. I had $250 or so in front of me, the pot after the flop was small 3 players minus the rake means, $9 in the pot. I was in a crappy position and the table had been pretty agressive, so I tried to check raise. I bet $10 after the turn thinking it would give me a good idea who was drawing and who was trying to protect a mad hand. I was pretty sure no one had flopped 2 pair or a set so I was pretty sure I was ahead still but I didnt have much invested in the pot so big bet, over betting the pot would be a dumb play. Than with 3 callers I'm pretty sure that if the flush card hits I'm done, when the board pairs with a flush card. I know I'm done, I didnt lose a lot of money on this hand, so its hardly a bad beat, but it was a rough day and this was like the final comedy of errors. I have had a good couple of weeks so a day like this was bound to happen eventually.

What kind of game has only a $100 buy in with $2/$4 blinds and rakes $3 out of the $12 pot? If the flop came 3 way, the pot before the rake had to be $12 or $14.

Rhound is probably talking about Ocean's 11 Casino. They rake $3/hand, which really, really sucks on their $40 buy-in table.

There's usually a minimum pot size, below which they don't rake ($7 on the $40 table).

Its actually a 2/3 NL buy in with a $100 buy in and as Nortonesqu said it is at oceans 11. The drop is $4, which is normally pretty high but there is usually enough table action that the drop isnt as bad as one might think. Plus with those table running pretty much 24/7 usually half of the table has $200-$500 sitting in front of them. I refuse to play the $40 buy in with a $3 rake that is way much to make the game easy to beat even with some bad players sitting at the table. The only reason I posted this hand was it was kind of funny to me. Talk about the worst possible turn and river to counterfit a hand that was the nuts after the flop.
