live play - tells

Postby m9man » Mon Jul 16, 2007 12:21 pm

not a subject discussed too often since most of us built / grew our rolls from online play.

BUT is there a thread somewhere on BTP about live play tells? I know I could put a few down, and Im sure live (B&M) specialists could give us more. whose mostly live player out there? k3nt? rhound50? briachek?

obv, tells r generally guidelines and each fish has their own indicators and some ppl fake tells. and just becase hes weakdoesnt mean he will fold... but some lessons learned from expensive pots could be shared. thereby hopefully sparing the readers some painful firsthand schoolings...

MODs - feel free to move the post. its poker strategy but not sure if it should be under NL since it applies across betting structures...

I think if you search through the Poker rooms forum you may find something.

Let me say though that in general I think that live tells are hugely overrated and you will get a tonne more out of the game by learning betting patterns, understanding hand ranges, etc.
Poker is silly.

i agree GLR. personally i think betting patterns is the most important thing.

tells should be considered another tool in the arsenal. however they can be helpful at times

I agree and disagree with Roy. A lot of players do often overrate live tells, they really are just a small percentage of understanding poker. Betting patterns and hand ranges are more important than physical tells. The thing about physical tells is they can at times make a huge difference in the hand. No limit especially one small piece of information can be a the difference between losing a 100-200bb's and losing none. Pick up one good tell and save yourself a 2 buy in loss in one hand is huge long run.

Some live tells I tend to look for.

The eye tell is huge. Someone that looks directly to your chips or their chips after seeing the flop has a monster a huge % of the time.

The hand shaking is a good tell of strength. It usually only works with newer players, but it is pretty damn close to 100% accurate.

A little weaker tell is chip betting, someone who bets chips at you. Almost throws them at you is usally weak. When they stack them up neatly it often is strength.

People rarely talk when they are bluffing, most of the time when people want a call they talk a lot. When they are bluffing they are quite.

When someone says "be care full" as you are about to bet it almost always means they are weak and are looking for a free card.

When someone calls a flop or turn bet really fast it often means a draw, people rarely call fast with a monster because if they are slow playing they don't want to bring attention to themselves as they feel it gives away the strength of their hand.

When someone takes a while, thinks for a while and raises it is almost always a monster.

One of the most obvious tell is "player sitting next to you tell." If you look over and GodlikeRoy is sitting next to you its a really good tell you are going to run bad and the best EV play is to get up and leave as he is the new Seb.

Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.
