I agree and disagree with Roy. A lot of players do often overrate live tells, they really are just a small percentage of understanding poker. Betting patterns and hand ranges are more important than physical tells. The thing about physical tells is they can at times make a huge difference in the hand. No limit especially one small piece of information can be a the difference between losing a 100-200bb's and losing none. Pick up one good tell and save yourself a 2 buy in loss in one hand is huge long run.
Some live tells I tend to look for.
The eye tell is huge. Someone that looks directly to your chips or their chips after seeing the flop has a monster a huge % of the time.
The hand shaking is a good tell of strength. It usually only works with newer players, but it is pretty damn close to 100% accurate.
A little weaker tell is chip betting, someone who bets chips at you. Almost throws them at you is usally weak. When they stack them up neatly it often is strength.
People rarely talk when they are bluffing, most of the time when people want a call they talk a lot. When they are bluffing they are quite.
When someone says "be care full" as you are about to bet it almost always means they are weak and are looking for a free card.
When someone calls a flop or turn bet really fast it often means a draw, people rarely call fast with a monster because if they are slow playing they don't want to bring attention to themselves as they feel it gives away the strength of their hand.
When someone takes a while, thinks for a while and raises it is almost always a monster.
One of the most obvious tell is "player sitting next to you tell." If you look over and GodlikeRoy is sitting next to you its a really good tell you are going to run bad and the best EV play is to get up and leave as he is the new Seb.
