That does no contradict what I said. There are those who gamble for recreation, and there are addicts. The examples provided would be of recreational gamblers.
But more importantly... so what? It's not a revelation that people get addicted and make bad life choices. Just the other day I read how a couple had their children taken away by social services because they hadn't fed them for days, busy playing computer games. This is part of human nature and part of our society, probably always have been and probably always will. Don't you think people went broke betting on the races in the Colloseum in ancient rome?
That's why I am surprised that people even react to this article. Yes there's a problem, but it's not new and it's nothing special compared to the others. I guess he's annoyed that it's being promoted? Well the gambling hotlines are being promoted as well and what about all the vodka, wine or whiskey commercials? It's not like AA gets as much air time.
The article was of course kind of unstructured and stupidly sensationalistic, but it's not like the basis for it isn't there. It's just that it's not a sensation.
