Smallmouth fishing help....trout/salmon?

Postby shamdonk » Wed Aug 08, 2007 8:27 am

I am going camping in Maine this weekend on the Saco river (I don't think many people live in NE on this board) Anyways there are a ton of lakes and ponds that I will go to a few mornings but I will be prodominately on the river. Apparently there is alot alot of salmon, trout, and small mouth bass. I have never fished for trout or salmon in my life so unless someone has a massholes guide to catching salmon and trout; I probably won't be doing that.

My entire life I have fished for large mouth bass, never ever smallies. I was doing some breif reading about their choice of cover (or lack of) and depth of water yet I really don't know what to throw. I was thinking of a sluggo, maybe a 1oz spinner?, couple of cranks? These were suggested but I was wondering if anyone used carolina or anything else and has had a great amount of success.

Apparently the water conditions are clear to barely stained with temps of about 63-68. I am not sure of the current but that is all the info I have to go on...

Any advice at all would be great...
Be glad your opponents refuse to fold; if they didn't, you just might go broke.

I have done some smallmouth fishing in AZ in the mountains in rivers. The only thing I have used is rapala style lures that look like crawfish. probably about an 1 1/4" long.

the only way I have ever really fished for trout was in smaller rivers, streams just drifting a worm into an eddie.

best thing is probably to find some smaller tackle shops to ask.

EDs ideas all look good too.

Poker is silly.

It is not enough to be good at chess, you must also play well.

Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win.
