I spent 3 years managing a hedge fund before leaving to get an MBA. In case you don't know, a hedge fund is like a mutual fund but just for rich folks and its ultra aggressive.
I cannot tell you how many people i ran across in the industry who were absolute geniuses. They had complicated models, they understood regression and multiple levels, etc.
But when the market moved against them (kinda like your opponent pushing all in), you'd be surprised how many of them couldn't think, making their models worthless.
It's always more than just math!
