Feedback on a hand played Early in a Deep Stack Tourney

Postby Bazkar » Sun Oct 29, 2006 10:05 pm

I'd love to get feedback on a hand I played recently in a live deep stack tournament. It was a Heartland Poker Tour event. The buy-ins are different depending on where the event is held. The one I went to had a direct buy-in to the main event for $2800. They ran 7 qualifiers during the week that you could buy into for $560. In these qualifiers you had to get top 20% and you got a seat into the main event. That's how I got in by getting top 17 out of 83 in my qualifier. Many people got into the qualifiers through single table satellites which they were running around the clock all week for $65 or $125 sending one or two people into the qualifier. The qualifier had starting chips of T10000 with 30 minute levels starting at 100/100 and antes kicked in at level 4. I learned really quick that a lot of the people still played as if the blinds were going up fast and they didn't have a lot of chips. People were more than willing to put all their chips at risk early with as little as TPGK. The main event started with T15000 with 30 minute levels and blinds started at 100/200.

There were 183 players in the main event. I only played with one other person at my table during the qualifier. On the first two hands of the tournament with the blinds at 100/200 the same guy raised to T600 and it folded around so he picked up the blinds. On the third hand I was in the big blind and he was UTG +2 and he raised it again to T600. It folded to me and I looked down at Kd 10d.

I will now list how the action went and would love feedback on how I could have (or should have) played the hand differently in order to win more or lose less.

I called T400 more from the big blind with Kd 10d and the pot total was T1300.

The flop came Kc 8d 10s.
I checked and he bet T1500.
I called. (Total Pot T4300)
The turn was the 4d.
I checked and he bet T4000.
I called. (Total Pot T12300)
The river was the 9c.
I checked and he bet T3000.
I called (Total Pot was T18300 leaving me T5900 behind).

What were his range of holdings? What are his likely holdings based on the action?
How should I have played the hand differently? Should I have played it differently?

I will post my thoughts during the hand as well as his actual holding but was hoping to kick off some discussion and/or feedback first.

All feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

I would lead this flop and never fold it no matter how the action came with that turn.

Although I orginally posted that I would play it differently, and I still would removed from the situation and without any additional information, there is something to be said about instincts and intuition. A common disclaimer when giving out poker advice is, "You probably know your situation better than I do, but...". The instincts and intuition of some players is better than others. I'm sure some other members here would disagree, but I know that overall these 2 things have helped me more than they have hurt me. In MTT's, where you can't just re-load when your wrong, you sometimes have to rely on these things as much as what the numbers say.

Most of the time my gut is a moron. I'd pay for one that works as well as yours did this hand. Great poker players all have great instincts. Nice read!
