Nut low facing big turn bet...

Postby stickdude » Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:23 pm

I've dropped down to the $10 tables to make my PLO8 education not quite as expensive. here's something that seems to come up all the time - I've got a nut one-way hand and villian throws out a big bet. Do I simply call him down and hope it stands up?

Comments on all streets appreciated...

misread the mini bet as a bet of 50 cents. in that case, i might raise it out of principle for the same reason you did. it looks like he was trying to get a cheap card for a low draw. I call the turn and call whatever river as long as you don't get counterfitted. He may just have a bare low and not much high.

even at these small limits, i think you should try to get some reads. i want to know if this is the kind of donkey who will make this kind of weak play with a bare nut low draw and then power on the turn.

my line would be different in the following ways:

- i probably wouldn't pfr. while you have a decent hand in good position, i don't think you should raise marginal hands like this at these limits. you don't have any counterfeit protection and you only have limited draws to the high. furthermore, you usually don't get much fold equity in these games, so you'll often find yourself in a tricky spot even when you hit a decent flop (kind of like this).

- since you don't have a high or a draw to a high, i'd actually consider just calling the stupid .05 flop bet. i want lots of people in the pot until i get something for a high. the power play is good if you feel confident that you have some fold equity, but again, i rarely find that this is the case at lower limits -- fold equity is not really how you're looking to make your money. i have to admit that bbp is good at getting fold equity even at low limits, but that's just a totally different style, and i'm not sure it is necessarily the most profitable.

- on the turn i'd usually fold to this kind of action. you're behind everything but a bare nut low with no flush draws and a lower kicker. even if you know the donkey in pushing A3 hard and may or may not have a high, i just don't see a reason to put your stack at risk for what is likely to be a split.

I don't think there's much value in calling that turn. I'm not convinced by the flop raise either, I don't think there's a chance in hell you'll make everyone fold at this level. Just take a look at the cheap turn that's on offer.

I'd stick with the 25s instead of the 10s if you have a vague idea what you're doing (which I believe you do).
