Thoughts on breaking a 9

Postby kingsalami » Tue Mar 01, 2005 9:44 am

You are playing 2-7 triple draw, and have 2,3,4,8,9 Do you break the 9 and draw one, or do you stand pat, and if you do are you raising it up. Lets say you are on the button and see that everyone else is drawing 2. You have just sat down and have no reads on anyone.
Vinny: Why are we stopped here? What's wrong with that spot?
Tyrone: It's too tight.
Vinny: Too tight? You could land a jumbo f*cking jet in that.

with my VERY limited experience with this and assuming I completely understand what your asking:

I would stand pat and bet to push people out. With everyone drawing 2, you can see who drew well by who called you and then you can reevaluate after seeing how many they draw the second time, but once you stand pat, you can't draw because they will likely see the weakness and you are drawing pretty thin because some of the cards you need are likely to be out with anyone staying in with you. I would probably bet twice and check behind on the last one.

In single draw you definately stand pat, in double you most likely would. I dunno about triple though, I think that 8 will probably kill you a lot.

In A-5 triple, I wouldn't stand on a rough 8, so I guess a 9 is basically the same thing in 2-7.

Dunno, maybe 2-7 is more different than I thought.

If you're talking about the first draw, then I'd draw. They've got lots of chances to catch up, and you've got 12 outs to a fairly smooth 8, which is a pretty decent hand, and 3 chances to draw at it. Pretty good odds.

If this is the third draw, then I'd definitely stand pat. You're a favorite against 2 people drawing 2.

I've been staying pat with a 9 because i find when i don't more often then not i draw crap and wish i had stayed pat. In my limited playing experience i see that 9 high or 8 high wins more often then not. what seems to be almost more important is your second high card, ie with a 23459 59 is my two highs i always stay pat. I know in ss2 dan n ssays never to break an 8-6 or 8-6 high hand, especially as a beginner. The problem i have with this game, especially online is it's a very "tell" oriented game. I think it def. helps improve your reading skills for other games.

I think of a 9 as the equivalent of top pair crappy kicker in hold 'em. I see it win, and I may occasionally win with it, but it isn't a hand I'll put a lot of money on or win a lot of money with.

Briachek,

all comments are welcome, i don't think there are any expert 2-7 or A-5 players on this board. I think we're all pretty much in ths same boat as far as experience goes. We should all get together on ub and crash a table.

I'll sit on a play money table. Still a learning experience.

I'm not sure you're ready for a play-money table yet Brian, perhaps you should sit on one of the play-matchstick tables before you try to take on the big boys....

After all there's nothing worse than playing with scared play-money  !
