Just an interesting 1/2 NL hand for review

Postby kennyg » Tue Mar 22, 2005 6:32 pm

I had no read on this guy. Do you guys call this river? I thought about it and I decided I probably induced a bluff. He bet very quickly which I thought was interesting as well.

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (9 handed)

MP1 ($280.45)
MP2 ($119.60)
MP3 ($72.30)
CO ($190)
Button ($312.35)
kennyg ($224.20)
BB ($50)
UTG ($197)
UTG+1 ($264.20)

Preflop: kennyg is SB with [7h], [8d]. CO posts a blind of $2.
3 folds, MP2 calls $2, 1 fold, CO (poster) checks, 1 fold, kennyg completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($8) [3c], [7c], [6d] (4 players)
kennyg bets $8, BB calls $8, MP2 folds, CO calls $8.

Turn: ($32) [8s] (3 players)
kennyg bets $16, BB folds, CO calls $16.

River: ($64) [Ah] (2 players)
kennyg checks, CO bets $64, kennyg calls $64.

Final Pot: $192

Results in white below:
kennyg has 7h 8d (two pair, eights and sevens).
CO has Jh 3s (one pair, threes).
Outcome: kennyg wins $192.

Im guessing this guys only poker knowledge comes from watching the WPT.

I wouldve called the river also, but would expect to lose close to half the time to A7 or A6. Thats ok because youre getting 2-1 to call so even if you lose 50% of the time its still +EV.

This is pretty much my default setting for playing a hand like this against an unknown opponent. The board has both straight and flush draws so you have to figure a good percentage of the time you are up against a chaser. The ace on the hand makes it interesting. If you bet out you may get called by the ace of clubs and no second pair but I prefer checking because what wtf do you do if he raises? It definitely looks like you induced a bluff - I like checking semi-strong hands on the river, probably more than I should, but it decreases your variance if you are behind.

good flops
