Is it possible to excel at nl and limit?

Postby james » Sat Mar 26, 2005 10:52 am

Is it possible to excel at nl and limit? This is my first post on any forum, but I have been debateing this with myself heavily lately. Can anyone here successfully switch from one to the other in a given day and maintain a high skill level?

Of course you can be good at both! The funny thing is that I think people should learn limit holdem first and then play NL. Most players play NL first nowadays and it is to the skilled players advantage for sure! It is to your advantage to play and study all of the games because as you learn a new game you start seeing your old game from different angles.

I havent played limit in a while but making the switch is super easy, especially when you play against loose opponents. I'm not going to go over what to do in limit as opposed to NL but yes, you can be good at both. Personally the main reason I dont play limit is because I like shorter sessions...when you are stuck in a limit game you have to sit for a while to get it back whereas in NL you can get it all in one pot.

good flops

James... I'm sure you could be good at both... I started at limit, moved up to NL, and can't move back... There are strategies in NL you can't use in lower limit (ie bluffing...)... I haven't tried a higher limit (maybe I will in Vegas), but playing a 2/4 or 3/6 limit game to me now is like watching paint dry... Nothing more frustrating than getting dealt AA, 8 callers to the river, and some jackball hits his K2o 2 pair... :x

NEways, welcome to the forum and good luck...

Its possible but very rare. Not because it cant be done, but because most people just flat out like one better than the other.

Theres so much money to be won nowadays and so many tables avail, theres no reason or incentive to become an expert at both. But if you want to do it, sure its possible.

The main reason I ask is because every so often I burn out at limit hold em and need a different game. Is nl and limit just different enough to screw me up and I should focus on somthing like omaha or 7 stud?

If your not pretty good at one of them already, then yes, it will probably screw you up.
