I played this like a muppet

Postby iceman5 » Thu Apr 07, 2005 10:45 am

I know a what a muppet is, but why do people use that term at the poker table? I dont know.....any way....

$2/$4 NL.

Im in the BB with 66. UTG limps, button limps, SB completes and we see the flop 4 way.

Pot is $24 and the flop is 6QQ. I check and it gets checked around.
Turn is a 7 and it gets checked around. Did I mention that Im a muppet?

River is a ten. I bet $14, UTG raises to $40. Its folded back to me. He has another $100. Whats my play?

If I had bet the flop I would be willing to play for it all, but I have a bad feeling he has 77 or TT. DId I mention Im a muppet?

I think you always fear the worst. Which makes you a good player. But I think he just has a strong queen, and he thinks if you do have a queen he has you outkicked.

What is your stack? If you have him covered I say push. You only reasonably fear 3 hands (TT, 77, QT), and I think you are much more likely to see AQ, KQ, QJ, or even a weaker Queen. At the very least I would call this bet. You are getting even money odds, and I think you are better than even money to have the best hand.

while he'll definatly call you're all in with a hand that you beat (ie. AQ, KQ, QJ, and maybe even a few lower queens), there's still enough likely hands out there that can beat you.

i say smooth call. you might get irritated with yourself for missing out on his last $100 when he's got KQ, but at least you won't lose the extra $100 for misplaying it if you let him catch up with 77 or TT

on a seperate note, do you normally not bet the turn here?

Yes I normally bet the turn and alot of times I bet the flop. No doubt I screwed this one up.

Im not folding by any means. I just wasnt sure if I should push or not. The raiser could easily just have a ten. Which is why I wanted to let someone catch up.

I think it's a crime not to bet the flop. And again on the turn. The BTP PD will have to lock you up if you do that again.

damn ice!! I just read the results...but I was saying to myself put him all-in the entire time. I know you've been working on your river aggression so I was surprised you didn't. I thought AQ,KQ, and QJ were very likely in this spot.

Eh....it happens though. :)

a small question...
Is there a reason you guys all are pushing to bet out the flop? You hit one of the best hands you can hope for when limping w/ 66, and betting might chase people playing a PP or AQ,KQ... Isn't checking the flop, hoping for a little action, the best move? Then, if no one bites, bet the turn, hoping Mister AQ or KQ will raise you...?

I would say check the flop and bet the turn. Not betting the turn makes Jesus cry.

I would say bet the flop

MVP

A lot of my poker knowledge comes from Doyle Brunson's Super System. And I know the other posters have read it too.

Doyle writes that when you flop the under full, you should make a big bet (overbet). You’re only going to win any money if someone has trips. You want to be sure there’s enough money involved so you can win a big pot.

There are a a lot of other reasons to do it:
- Charge flush and straight draws
- Avoid tricky river decisions like the one described in this post
- Some players will not believe you have a hand when you bet out on this kind of flop and raise you with nothing.
- When you bet your big hands you can also bet your marginal hands

There are probably some other reasons to bet out but I cant think of more.
