Well I'm teaching beginners class yesterday to a bunch of new players and this guy keeps coming in with garbage - despite me giving him strict written guidelines to come in with. After he played a K3o I asked him why. The why was simply because I can't correct his thinking if I don't understand it. Said he, "Well I was thinking that maybe a King could come." I pointed out that if a king did come then it was very likely that someone had a better king. He pointed out that he could flop 3 kings. Hard to argue with that. So I pointed out that while that is true - it won't happen enough to be profitable... he didn't look convinced. I did the math up on the board. He still didn't look convinced. Then I found the argument that worked... it's great when you get to see the light go off. Here was the argument:
You leave class tonight and go home. When you walk in the front door your wife greets you with a question: "Does this dress make me look fat?" Now it's possible that you will somehow, miraculously come up with the perfect answer but you have to hate the question cause you know that you are going to be wrong WAY more than you're going to be right. This is an example of a negative EV situation.
I'm happy to report that I solved his looseness problem.... can any recommend what to tell him to get him to play a hand now cause he's throwing everything but AA away pre-flop now.
