Who checks and who bets

Postby kennyg » Mon Apr 18, 2005 11:17 pm

1/2 NL Prima

Villian is fairly loose but not a complete moron. I've seen him fold a couple of times but he's still a fish. I have $200 and he has me covered.

I get [4h][5h] in MP and raise to $8. Button and SB (villan) call.

FLOP $26
[Td][9h][3c]

Villian checks to me, I bet $20. Button folds. Villian check-calls.

TURN $66
[Td][9h][3c][2h]
Nice card. I'm openended and have a low flush draw. Villian checks. Do you check or bet? If you bet, how much? Why or why not??

I'll tell you what I did a little later.

This is very read dependant for me. Against a decent player I made a strong bet here for two reasons, first it looks like I have a made hand and there is a decent chance that I can win it right here, second if my opponant calls and either one of my draws hit it is going to be very hard for him to put me on a hand.

The only time I dont bet this is vs a bad enough player that will pay me off it I make my hand or obviously against a player who I think is strong and trying to check raise me.

i check behind here -

I say he has a T and will call a turn bet. Or he has JQ and you want him to make his straight with a heart and take his whole stack.

Plus he may have a set.

I bet $50 which he thought about and thought about..then called.

The river was the [8c] and he moved allin in front of me for $120. My guess was he had JQ or a set...probably JQ.

I usually like betting in those spots because it gives me another chance to win the hand...and it doesn't let the other guy now what a monster I'm actually drawing to.

I like iceman's reasoning on average players calling too much though.

I fully agree with betting here. It not only gives you a chance to take down the pot right there, but also builds the pot so that if you hit one of your gazillion outs you can possibly take his stack on the river.

i like it.

but i check here and take the free card. if you hit you can raise if your opponent bets the river (which i think is likely). if you bet and he's got a set, you're likely to get taken off your draw.

what's more, checking makes it look like AK. best case scenario, he has 33/99/TT, you river the ace for the wheel, he bets, you raise, he thinks he caught a fish with TPTK and you take a stack.
