Raised too much?

Prima $100 NL

I have AA utg, i limp, folds to the button who raises to 4, folds back to me, then I raised it to 16, he mucks.

Was this too much? I've a feeling it might be, so how much should I go for instead? 12, 14 ?

If it was just you and him, I'll usually triple his bet, so $12...
