Calling raises w/ AK

Postby Jeffm351 » Tue Apr 19, 2005 5:19 am

How big a raise do you call w/ AKs or os? it would seem that most EP raises will probably be AA/KK and totally dominate AK. Iv been a bit more liberal w/ calling raises when its a LP or loose player making the raise, but generally fold to anything 5BB+ if im not already in the pot.

I like AK much more in a tourney than I do in a cash game. In a cash game if you call a raise with it, youre going to miess 2/3 of the time and have to fold since most raiser will bet the flop.

They may even bet the flop with their AK and you have to fold yours.

If you hit an ace or king, chances are you'll get no action besides maybe a flop continuation bet. Most people arent going to lose much with JJ when an ace flops.

The only way to win a big pot is to flop an ace against AQ or flop a king against KQ type hand.

So if the raiser is tight and is tough to extract money from , then I'll fold AK to a 5BB raise every time.

Heres an example..Just played this hand

Why does he call my raise preflop?
2 out of 3 times hes going to lose $27 when an ace or king doesnt flop
1 time in 3 an ace or king will flop (less since I have AA). When an ace or king does flop, Im not betting $80 with QQ. So the times an ace or king flops, either he wins the $95 pot minus his $27 for a total of $68...or he loses his stack...........Dont call that raise against a solid tight player like yours truly.

I prefer to re-raise or fold AK pre-flop. I re-raise a 2-4xbb raise, and fold to anything larger. Reason being people will often raise the smaller aces, like AQ and AJ, though these will tend to be smaller raises. Also people tend to raise med PP's in EP, and in these cases you want to prevent them leading out on the flop. The reason for this is you are a coinflip pre-flop, but if the flop is blank with maybe a couple of overcards to their hand and they check, you can often steal the pot.

I tend to like AK for the bluffing potential rather than its actual strength. Being the best drawing hand pre-flop I want to be the agressor against all moderate hands, and I want to make sure I am not in a pot vs. AA or KK. Doyle Brunson claims to like AK the best of the big 3 because you can be so agressive with it, and it is much easier to lay down against any heavy action.
