Best Lay down of my life

Postby Rhound50 » Sun Apr 24, 2005 2:46 am

I played live 2/4 Nl tonight for the first time in a couple of weeks. I am on the button with [Ah] [Jh], 4 or 5 limpers, I call . BB raises to $20. I have $525 in front of me and he has me covered, he is a pretty solid player most of the time but I have also seen him dump off large chunks of money, a raise from his BB means he has a hand. 3 players in front of me call, so I decide to call, my thinking being hit the flop for $16 more and have a chance to double up. Flop is AQJ, raiser checks, and it checks to me. I bet $80 thinking top and bottom is most likely the best hand, preflop raiser call, everyone else folds. I'm a little worried now and I think he may have AQ. Turn is the J filling me up, as the jack hits he looks away from the board and squirms a little in his seat, thank you Caros book of poker tells. He thinks he just made his hand, cant be AQ thanm that just leaves me puttng him on AA or QQ. He flinches toward his chips and checks. I check behind him , I am now very sure I'm behind. River is a 3, he leads out $50, the pot is now $250. I think about it and say I fold and show him the AJ, the look on his face was priceless. He grumbles how can you fold that and shows QQ. If it is possible to put someone on tilt by winning a hand, I did it. He pissed away $600 in the next 45 min and left. Unfortunatly none was to me, but I almost feel like I won, that was a hand I easily could have lost my whole stack sot this was almost as good as winning the pot.

I think it was a great read. What type of hand does someone make a huge raise with out of the big blind, and then check-call a large bet on the flop?

Answer: A monster.

The key was making the large bet on the flop, if you only made a half-pot bet you can't be as assured with your read.

I think an even better laydown would have been mucking the AJ preflop. :D

Nonetheless, nice read
