Pocket Q's UTG against a rock

Postby bkholdem » Mon May 02, 2005 5:20 pm

I got called in 2 places preflop. mp folded but when Vilian called this concerned me. He was a rock. I think I made a mistake by calling the river bet. I didn't think through the hand prior to calling and think this was a mistake. Evaluating afterwards I think the only hand I beat that he can hold is JJ.

I've really been focusing on improving my play recently and it's helping a lot. Any feedback?

MP1 ($16.45)
MP2 ($77.55)
MP3 ($41.6)
CO =#A500AF(Villian)/ ($65.46)
Button ($53.75)
SB ($52.15)
BB ($19.75)
Hero ($50.25)
UTG+1 ($0)
UTG+2 ($149.3)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [Qc], [Qd]. SB posts a blind of $0.25.
Hero raises to $2, 1 fold, MP1 calls $2, 2 folds, CO =#A500AF(Villian)/ calls $2, 3 folds.

Flop: ($6.75) [8d], [4h], [5d] (4 players)
Hero bets $5.5, MP1 folds, Villian calls $5.50.

Turn: ($17.75) [Td] (3 players)
Hero checks, Villian checks.

River: ($17.75) [6s] (3 players)
Hero checks, Villian bets $8, Hero calls $8.

Final Pot: $33.75

i dont really see anything wrong with the way you played it, but I would have fired another bet on the turn try and figure out where i stand against the rock. the call on the river is fine becuase of the size of the bet, i would have folded here to a larger bet.

When you check the turn and river, I think you have to call the small bet on the end. You're getting 3:1 and have set yourself up to get bluffed out. If this guy is just a complete super rock, I could see laying this down, but o/w I think you have to call. I know, you don't beat much (JJ, 99, maybe even 77 or 66).

[Ad][Jd]?

Thanks for the feedback guys. The reason I called is because of the size of the bet on the river. If it was much bigger I think I would have folded. I would have bet out the turn at least some of the time against most players, but the fact that the rock called an (almost) pot size bet on the flop from an UTG preflop raiser concerned me. I would have checked almost any turn against him except a queen. I didn't watch this guy play much (I four table) but didn't like his GT+ stats.

I'm really focusing on plugging leaks lately and trying to not pay off when I can avoid it based on reads.

He flopped a set of 5's and as I thought about the hand afterwards I started seeing his river bet as a value bet. I also didn't think most rocks would bluff a river (if he wasn't on a flush draw on the flop what kind of draw could he be on?) And the more I thought about it I thought a rock would fold an underpair on the flop after the UTG preflop raiser pots the flop.

Hell... I wish I would only give up $15 when I have an overpair and some hit their trips... I think you played it fine, except that I would have bet the turn... With the turn and river checks, you seemed very weak, and his riverbet could have easily been to bluff you off w/ a pair of 8s or any other weak holding...
