Opinions of how to play this hand.

Postby Rhound50 » Thu May 05, 2005 1:55 am

I am playing my new favorite fishy 1/3 NL 200 max buy in. I am the co with JJ. 4 players limp to me. I raise to $25, two players call and the 3rd player short stacked pushes all in for $50. One of the reasons that I made the raise o $25 specficly was because this guy only had $50 and I was pretty sure if he called my raise he was going to push all in. By betting $25 I give myself the option of reraisng. So he pushes all in for $50, this guys is super tight, so at best I'm thinking I'm a coin flip and 50/50 I'm behind to a bigger pp. I think about it and decide to push all in. To push out the other two guys, my thinking here being, neither one of them has me beat, both just called a raise, anythink that had me beat would have reraised after I raised. If both of them fold, I am only putting another $25 into a pot to win $150, so even vs a bigger pair its a +ev play. If they both call I have the best hand and am hoping to see lots of small cards. Any opionins, I debated just calling and waiting for a flop, and pushing if the flop was good??? To agressive preflop????

I'm assuming that the first two players to call were the first two limpers and that the third limper moved in? You were a little vague on who called and who the "super-tight" guy was.

Even if "super tight" is playing like his namesake, is he also super-passive? Because I can't see someone limping in after 2 limpers with a holding that is beating you right now. Still, even if he does have a monster you are definitely correct in moving in here to try and isolate the all-in player.

One thing that is important to look at in the situation though is whether or not you have enough leverage (big enough stack) to effectively push out the limpers instead of them deciding to gamble with the rest of their stack?

Sorry bob let me clarify a little here, the first two limpers were the callers of my raise, both were weak calling station type players. The limper right before me, was the the tight player that moved in, and yes he was quite passive. He was definatly weak tight. I had $400 or so in front of me, the other two players had about $150 and $100 left respectively after they called the raise.

Well if the guy is weak tight you could be beat, but getting 5-1 on your money isn't so bad when there is even a chance you could be ahead. With each of the calling stations having $100 and $125 in front of them I think your chances of shutting them out of the hand are pretty good as well. I don't think it is too aggressive here, you really need to narrow the competition.

I actually make this exact kind of play on prima all the time. On prima...even if your allin raise is only a dollar more then a $400 bet (any amount)...it can be reraised. Maybe not so fair...but when you know it and use it wisely...it can benefit you well.

anyway...yeah i like the play a lot.

I agree, the only time I might play it differently was if I was absolutely sure Mr. Super-Tight had AA and I thought one or two of the others might call the extra $25 and put in some more money postflop with a losing hand. In this case it might be worth just calling to try and build a sidepot where you're a favorite to balance the all-in where you're sure you're behind.
