2/4NL Questionable Turn Play with AK

Postby Mad Genius » Wed May 04, 2005 4:55 pm

PokerStars 2/4NL 6-max. I just started playing these today and they look GREAT. Here is a hand that I just played. I had just sat down so no good reads. I'm not particularly interested in my flop bet, because I am going full LAG-mode in these 6-max games and raising preflop QUITE often and following it up with a 3/4 pot bet 99% of the time.

As far as the turn goes, I can see arguments for leading, check-raising, or check-calling. Discuss.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $4 BB (6 handed)

Hero ($465.40)
BB ($386.05)
UTG ($322.65)
MP ($806.60)
CO ($245.90)
Button ($167.60)

Preflop: Hero is SB with [Ad], [Ks].
UTG calls $4, 2 folds, Button calls $4, Hero raises to $20, 1 fold, UTG calls $16, Button calls $16.

Flop: ($64) [Js], [Th], [5d] (3 players)
Hero bets $40, UTG calls $40, Button folds.

Turn: ($144) [Kd] (2 players)
Hero checks, UTG bets $96, Hero raises to $405.4, UTG folds.

Final Pot: $645.40

the big question i have about your play is this.

do you think you have the best hand here?

I like the ultra-aggressive no fear play at the short handed tables, and i think it's a way to build up a reckless table image and get paid off later on, and for that reason i like this huge check raise. i just hope that the next time you do it you have an even stronger hand.

That check raise is a good, strong play in this situation. It's very hard for even two pair to call you here. Looks like you have JJ or AQ.

However, I hope you're ready for the huge varience if you're gonna play like this all the time. IMO this would be a stronger play in a live game vs online..so you can see your opponent and tell he has some weakness.

Your opponent can have any numbers of hands here..and without a read...well he might just be a calling station and call you with something like J10. Q9 would suck too.

All that being said; I like the play. Just not the swings you're gonna have with it. God forbid you make this play on party poker though. :)

Is it a value bet? A bluff? A semi-bluff? Only better hands will call and it is very likely that he has a better hand.

But I think the "bet flop, check-raise turn play" is much stronger shorthanded than in a full ringgame. In shorthanded games players are/should be more observant and after this hand the table knows, that when you check turn it doesn't mean they can take the pot away from you. Table image, metagame etc.
