All in to Isolate - Good Idea?

Postby thaninja » Thu May 05, 2005 1:11 am

Hi Fellow BTPer's

I am starting to get used to the site now and adding my own 2 cents whenever I see the need....first off.

An update to PT has been released April 27th.....I posted this in the PT forum but lotsa people don't frequently visit that one.

This is an aggressive move I made on the flop. I wouldl like your opinions on it because it is something that comes up often in the small stakes tables.

I am one off the button and get dealt AK. 2 limpers in front (one tight - has me covered, one without a read) I raise 6x BB ($1.50) preflop (my normal on these tables).... the smallest stack (SB) on the table goes all in ($2.95).... the two limpers call and I call ($1.50 to me)

Flop is all rags [4d 2s 8d ] (SB is all in) ....then two checks to me... I bet the pot ($10) to isolate against the original all in raiser. Both hands fold. I win AK to AJ - A on Turn.

(Original HH below)

1) At the time I felt this was a great move (I had raised preflop showing strength). As I look at the hand history do you think it would have been better to go all in preflop to isolate the raiser? I DO.

2) What do you think about my play here. Many of my plays are calling tiny stacks that go all in against my raise...or me calling their All in raise preflop. The $25 tables are full of situations like this. I find them to be profitable - if you can isolate the small stack. Should I push this hard to isolate a small stack?

Thanks,

ThaNinja

in this particular situation I like the all-in preflop to isolate the raiser. The EP players are being very passive and likely don't hold a monster hand you would hate to see turned over.

I agree, push it pf when it gets back to you. The other two dudes are just begging for a cheap flop. Punishing weak callers like this has got to be the most fun part of NL. Your AK is very strong here and you've got a chance to get a lot of dead money in the pot.

The best part of a play like this is it shows you have some 'gamble' (to the bad players anyway) and sets you up to make a similar move w/ AA or KK later on.
