Trying to Steal the Blinds

Postby rdale » Fri May 06, 2005 7:31 am

.25/.50 NL $50
Folds to me on the button($75), I raise $2 with [Ks] [5s] , SB folds, big blind ($50) makes it $5. Flops [As] [9s] [2c] , big blind leads for $10 I smooth call. Turn is a [5h] , big blind checks... What is your play on the flop? Given the way I played the flop how would you play the turn?

on a 4-flush like this I usually raise the flop in position hoping he will give me a free cards but that's not the question...

as he gives you a free card by checking, I take the free card so I check and hope to see a spade on the river. your 5 is likely to be behind a big pp he wants to check raise or an ace with a bad kicker.

I agree with molina and take the free card. you got the flush draw and you could hit your second pair but I would likely have folded preflop or to the flop bet. If I chose to continue after the flop, I would have considered a raise on the flop and then push the turn. Since you didn't push the flop, I take that free card.

Results?

I think the pot's big enough ($30) to be worth fighting for... against a pair (TT-KK), you should definitely push (30% pot equity, huge fold equity), so the main question is whether they'd play AK-AJ or KK the same way.

I reckon you have about $18 EV if they have a medium pair (corresponds to a fold equity of 66%). If they have AK-AJ/AA, your average EV is about -$4 (assuming no fold equity).

If you check behind, you have ~30% pot equity, ie EV ~= $10, so the break even point is if they play a TPTK+ hand like this more than a third of the time. My guess is they don't, so I push.

FWIW, I think I fold both pre-flop (K5s doesn't have enough chance of hitting enough to continue) and on the flop (you have nothing besides a flush draw).

I put the opponent on QQ preflop, I think AA or KK would have min raised and definitely bet turn with AA, I also think the opponent had me on AK AQ AJ preflop, which I would play with a smooth call on the flop and a raise on the turn heads up, even if the board was two suited unless the flush card hit. I often wait for the turn to get busy either way. I only limp the button maybe 1/3 of the time when opening, being reraised was a surprise, if I had limped and he raised I would have most likely folded, I will send $3 bad in after $2 good if I got a chance of making a hand.

At the turn:
I bet $20 figuring if he folded that was good, if he pushed all in that I would most likely be reloading $30 or playing a big stack unless I hit a spade, K or 5, and if he smooth called I was torn between giving up and value bluffing although he is too shallow to bluff on the river and isn't going to lay down an under pair to the board no matter what. Opponent folded.

I think this is one where there are multiple right ways to play the hand post flop, even if the best play preflop is fold.
