Well, first of all, is there enough wood in the fireplace that if burned slowly it would last the night? If so, the best likelihood of survival is to not touch anything to do with the candle or the lantern.

However, the fire should be broken down first, because the last thing you want to make is a bonfire and use up all of your wood to begin with - so you take off the large logs and medium sticks and apply the match (now light it) to the leaves and twigs to get the fire burning. Once it is, slowly apply a few sticks to it and allow it to burn enough that a log can be placed.

You don't want to light the lantern because it provides minimal heat and light is not an important part of the equation, UNLESS you don't have enough wood to tend the fire for the night. If that is the case, you light the candle first, the fire second and the lantern 3rd (because the lantern is the most likely of the three to put out the material lighting it.

That being said - I like TW's post - good to see that you've returned to form (even if your bankroll hasn't).

Vinny: Why are we stopped here? What's wrong with that spot?
Tyrone: It's too tight.
Vinny: Too tight? You could land a jumbo f*cking jet in that.

Okay, I still remain convinced that the candle should be lit first.

You can't just light the fire first, because even if you're pretty sure you can do it with one match...well, if it goes wrong, you're dead. You can't light the lantern first because...okay, I don't actually even know how lanterns work, never actually seen one 'cept in movies. But star said that lighting the lantern is most likely to go wrong, i.e. put out the match, and once again, you're dead.

So you start with a candle, cause that's just plain easiest. After that, hell, you want some back-up, so then you move over to the lantern. How do you light that? Not with the candle, because you don't wanna accidentally put that out in the process. So you...ummmm...grap a twig, right, and light that off the candle, use that to light the lantern, and then...ummmm...yeah, you keep up with the whole twig idea and use that to light the actual fire. Then again, I don't know whether the twig would actually burn or just kinda smolder...did I mention I'm not much for wilderness survival?

Well another option I hadn't mentioned was to soak a piece of clothing in kerosene and tie it around a stick (aka a torch). This way it is pretty easy to get a large flame going that is easily reproduceable. And I guess you really wouldn't want to soak it - it would be better to merely use a portion of the kerosene - and use some more on some of the twigs. I'm really not sure about the latent flamability of kerosene - but I imagine it is somewhat better than crude oil (which resists it quite well).

At this point I am going to have to take a step back.

If, by chance, anyone wants to read the story to which Wild Bill is referring, I seem to have found a transcript of it online. Can't vouch for its accuracy though - so take it for what its worth:

well, ok...getting ready to enter a MTT, so will give ya'll the real answer...good guesses but noone got it...
bit of a trick question...poker players are a bit tricky sometimes...the question was
"which would you light first?"

the only correct answer is...

heh heh, you would light the MATCH first!

more wilderness common sense questions to come... 8-)

(they made a 50 minute little movie of that story starstealer...it's actually quite good...make you feel like you're right there and it's 70 degrees below...starts off slow but you get into it)
