Are Kings Worth $2500?

Postby Mad Genius » Sat May 07, 2005 5:52 am

A little background here. MP3 is apparently a regular at 10/20 who has been going off on how he's lost 20K today. Recalling all the hands he lost, including AA vs AK, AA vs AQ, KK vs KJ, etc etc. He seemed to be REALLY steamed about it and although I didn't notice him being on complete tilt, he was definately being overaggressive in the hands he played. He was also saying things like "Well, I already lost 20k, might as well lose my last 1.1K." You get the idea.

I say that because it was the only reason why I didn't insta-muck my Kings. Still, I can't see a good argument being made for calling. I mean, he HAS to have KK or AA here, right? How obvious of a laydown is this?

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $10 BB (9 handed)

CO ($2770.85)
Button ($981)
SB ($1186)
BB ($1096)
Hero ($1216)
UTG+1 ($1227)
MP1 ($990)
MP2 ($1317.25)
MP3 ($1227.75)

Preflop: Hero is UTG with [Kc], [Ks].
Hero calls $10, 3 folds, MP3 raises to $40, 2 folds, SB calls $35, 1 fold, Hero raises to $140, MP3 raises to $1227.75, SB folds, Hero?????

The massive overbet all-in doesnt smell like AA. The fact that this guy is steaming means he is more likely to be overagressive. A player not tilting isnt going to overbet AA like this, but someone who is shell shocked and doesnt want to have to play the hand after the flop because he is frusterated might. So after thinking about it I think I fold here. The final

If I've just had a bad beat/ost a big hand and think people might think I'm on tilt, I'm all in with AA here in a flash..

I lay down here... He could have been trying to set everyone up to make it look like he was tilting saying he lost 20k already in the day to get paid off on his big hands. Also since you limped UTG and re-raised him he's GOT to put you on either AA or KK, so his re-raise all in pretty much screams AA. Best case scenario your a tie good fold.

I think you made a good fold. If he was really down 20k for the day and chasing his lost money then why would he be playing 5/10 rather than 10/20, where he could chase at bigger staker? Seems like a setup to me. Like Eaglesfan said, he knows what you have and what he is up against.

I don't care what he was saying. I call this everytime. Why is it so hard to fathom that he holds AK, QQ or worse?? There is only one hand beating KK here. This is why we have a bankroll.

If he's that good, he must know that you are good as well. Therefore isn't there enough of a chance that he knows that you know that he HAS to have AA, that he could be putting a move on you here with a lesser hand. If you follow me. :) Anyway I look forward to the day that I am good enough to lay down KK preflop. Just my 2 cents.

In Dan Harrington's book, he mentions the fact that he would NEVER lay kings down preflop. I simply can't believe him on this basis. True, I think the odds of you having Kings and another person having Aces is 44-1 (Is that right?), you have to be able to recognize it.

One case where I laid it down preflop was where, I limped UTG in order to re-raise. It limped around to the BB who raised it 4x the BB, I then re-raised it to 15x BB. We both know each other's game fairly well, and I'm almost certain he knew the play I was trying to put on, being the limp re-raise. So he pushed all in for 100x the BB. I had to ask myself, would he do that with Queens? Highly doubtful, so the only two hands I can really put him on are AA and KK. With me already having KK, the chances of him having the same hand are highly unlikely.

Slaz, I highly doubt he is making a move on Mad Genius here no matter how good he is. There's only 240 in the pot and he'd risk 1227 just to take down that 240? Not a very good price to bluff at all. Considering he's a good player he's just GOT to put Genius on either AA or KK, not optimal bluffing circumstances at all. I think he made a good laydown and really don't how some people wouldn't think about laying this down.

Last night I stayed up late playing poker with Tarot cards. I got a full house and four people died.
